Subject: Torque specs for rotor replacement? IP: Logged
Message: Howdy all,
does anyone have handy the torque specs needed for a rotor replacement on '01 Dak? I need the values for brake caliper mount, etc. as I want to get my new powerslots installed tonight. Thanks!

Message: Thanks, 22lb-ft it is! I don't think there's anything else I need right now, shouldn't have to disturb wheel bearings or anything else just to swap out the rotors and install new pads. Thanks again,

Message: Wow! Are we talking the same bolts here?? I'm talking about the 7mm allen head pins that the calipers float on, not the bolts for the caliper carrier bracket. I don't think the 7mm pins are big enough to take that kind of torque.....
My son and I put the PowerSlot rotors on tonight. Pretty straightforward job, the only tough parts were getting the rotors off the hubs, they were really rusted in place--both sides--and putting the outer spring clips back in place. We used a wooden hand screw clamp to push back the pistons, that worked really well. Pads we put in are Performance Friction carbon metallic. And yes, we torqued the 7mm pins to 22 ft-lb so if that's not correct somebody please speak up before I have a problem!
The old pads still had about 3/16 material on them, but I was amazed at how uneven, galled, and spot-welded the old rotors were. It's no wonder I had major shuddering everytime the brakes were used to the point of getting some heat.
Anyway, took a short drive tonight making stops from 30 down to near-stop, pedal is super solid and everything feels gooooooooooood. I'll be taking it easy back and forth to work for the next couple of weeks until things are broken in. Thanks for all the help, guys!

Message: DakotaCC. I'm a mechnic. Others might say different, but every
where I have worked, we don't look up torque specs for brakes. Just
make sure your mounting bracket is real good and tight. Hope you
lubed your bushings on your calipers.
Short story. we had a guy our dealership wanting torque specs for
something. One of the techs told him #5 on his air gun. Thats how
things are done!

Message: haha yeah thats how every tech i know does it. However we don't use airguns on the caliper mounting pins for removing or intalling because they are so easy to strip the threads on. Just make sure its tight but don't go all hulk hogan on it.

Message: Yeah thats what i meant too. I don't want to tell you how to do your job or anything, but if I were you I wouldn't use an air rachet either. Well I would have, and did, until I watched my boss strip the threads on the caliper mounting bracket on a durango with his air rachet. It made for a fun repair to fix that. I don't know what the torque rating on his air rachet was; all I know is that it was a 3/8ths drive. So unless you are using 1/4 inch, I would just stick to a hand rachet for those mounting pins. They strip easier than any of us would have thought.
Actually his brother stripped one too, but I don't remember what kind of car it was on. The funny thing was that some how it stripped the threads while he was removing them. I don't know if doing it by hand would have made the difference, but it could have.

Those of us who care about proper repairs, and those of us who expect you dealership techs to make sure things are to spec, HATE you guys.

fingers are pinch against something solid and I can't get my hand
off the lever!!
