Subject: Where to Start?

I have a 96' dakota sport 4x4, 130k miles. I other day driving to work I kicked it down pretty good on the highway to pass a car, when I did, the "Check engine" light came on. I didn't think much of it, after coming home from work I went to start it about 2 hrs. later to leave again and it turned over, but wouldn't start. It cranks over good, but just won't fire up. So I left it sit 2 more hrs. and tryed again. It finally started but idled rough, the rpm's were up and down till it died again. I tryed again,.. same thing, I had to keep giving it gas to keep it running, but it just won't stay running for more than about a minute before it just dies. I know it could be numerous things but, any thoughts on where to start? Thanks

If you can get a code reader it should tell you what's up. I know autozone rents them if you can't buy one. Other than that the fuel pump is a safe bet, also the idle air control valve, leaking fuel line, vacuum leakage, restricted intake or exaust systems. Good luck.

All the previously mentioned suggestions are good possibilities, for sure. I've had similar symptoms, and my problem was a vacuum leak on the intake.

I just got the truck back from the garage, It was the idle air control. I wonder what's next. I've spent about 5k on this truck in the last 4 mons. Thanks for the responses.
