Subject: Where to Start? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 96' dakota sport 4x4, 130k miles. I other day driving to work I kicked it down pretty good on the highway to pass a car, when I did, the "Check engine" light came on. I didn't think much of it, after coming home from work I went to start it about 2 hrs. later to leave again and it turned over, but wouldn't start. It cranks over good, but just won't fire up. So I left it sit 2 more hrs. and tryed again. It finally started but idled rough, the rpm's were up and down till it died again. I tryed again,.. same thing, I had to keep giving it gas to keep it running, but it just won't stay running for more than about a minute before it just dies. I know it could be numerous things but, any thoughts on where to start? Thanks

Message: If you can get a code reader it should tell you what's up. I know autozone rents them if you can't buy one. Other than that the fuel pump is a safe bet, also the idle air control valve, leaking fuel line, vacuum leakage, restricted intake or exaust systems. Good luck.

Message: All the previously mentioned suggestions are good possibilities, for sure. I've had similar symptoms, and my problem was a vacuum leak on the intake.

Message: I just got the truck back from the garage, It was the idle air control. I wonder what's next. I've spent about 5k on this truck in the last 4 mons. Thanks for the responses.
