 Subject: Rattle in steering column over bumps

My 02 4x2 reg cab has lately developed an obnoxious rattle from within the steering column cover when traveling down straight bumpy terrain/roads. I've studied nd searched all the forums and responses, and most seem to address the the rack and pinion or ball joints. My noise is definitelly inside the truck, and right behind the steering wheel hub, so I've eliminated those. I also noticed when stepping through the TSB for the steering column, that my ignition lock no longer locks my wheel when the key is removed. Is this what is making that horendous noise? Is there a TSB for this. Thanks alot, any help is greatly appreciated.

I've replaced countless steering shafts on dakotas and rams. This would be the part that connects the bottom of the steering column to the rack or steering box and goes through the floorboard. Normally they rattle at the joint and the noise carries up through the steering column and makes it sound as if the top of the column is rattling. I don't think the ignition lock thing would have much to do with it, but I guess you never know. Also, I'm guessing the TSB you went through was...loosening and retightening nuts and all that crap? Normally it never works. Hope this helps...

Everyone (Dealerhip) I talked to about this said I was hearing things. I've had the TSB service done by the dealership under warrenty. Didn't fix it.
I've had this noise in other veihcle too.
I don't think it is any serious problem, just noise on those type of roads.

The sound transference aspect sounds reasonable. Tell us please do you see this as a serious problem?

i have notice the same noise in my 03, it is very obnoxious and makes it sound like your truck is gonna fall apart
