Subject: TB and TPS cleaning IP: Logged
Message: Hello everyone.. I am considering doing a TB and TPS cleaning this weekend and am wondering if you have any cleaning tips? Anything in specific I need to keep an eye out for? What cleaning fluid is recommended? Truck has an irritating rough idle when the engine is cold between 500 and 600rpms that lasts about 3 to 5 seconds before it smooths out; it usually occurs when I turn on the truck in the morning. Doesn't really idle all that smooth afterwards either. Figure either it is a dirty TB or my plugs are hosed. Truck behaves fairly well when it warms up. Thanks folks.

Message: Any fuel injection type air/intake cleaner will work for the throttle bottle. Not much you can do with a TPS as far as I know. Be sure to remove your IAC and clean that port as well.

Message: as davec said, clean the IAC. just don't turn or push the plunger on it or you'll damage it. and make sure the o-ring is in place when you reinstall it. any quality carb/fuel injector cleaner will work.
do you still have the original battery? if so that could be part of your rough idle @ start up too. a weak battery can cause the PCM to do some funny things.

Message: Battery was replaced early last year I believe, so theoretically it should be good. Probably wouldn't hurt to go by Autozone and have them check it. Thanks for the suggestions you two.

Message: I have heard that it's something in the programming that makes this happen..
My 00 4.7 will do the same thing once in a while , during a cold start after sitting overnight It runs like it has a big cam for about 3-5 seconds, then revs up to near 1K (on it's own) then it's fine..
Runs like a scalded dog otherwise, but irritating nonethelss..
New batterey squeeky clean TB 2 different TPS sensors clean IAC valve and new plugs (tried sevral brands) And a LOT of injector cleaner...
I'm not worried about it, it's just an annoyance to me now.. it's a lot less frequent with the superchips tuning installed, and seems to happen more when it's humid out.

Message: Yeap, that is about how this feels and it does pop up to 1k RPMs to smooth it out, then drops back down (it is fine after the 1k jump-up). Been wanting to try a Superchips, but it hasn't been pleasing to my budget quite yet. Is there any way to program it to set the idle for say 800 RPMs instead of the 600/700 it has been wanting to do immediately after the first crank? It does it fairly consistently... so far every day. Welp, I'll start with the plugs and cleaning, then I'll work my way up.

Message: Wow.. just.. wow.. I couldn't believe all the black crap that was caked in my throttle body and the air channel going to the IAC. The IAC was pretty cruddy looking as well. Took me about two hours to get everything apart, cleaned really well, and reassembled. I also used some industrial grade electrical contact cleaner to clean the TPS contacts/connector as well as the IAC connector. I noticed a major idling change and throttle reponse after doing all of this. I found the easiest tool to use in cleaning the IAC is a soft-bristle toothbrush soaked in carb cleaner. Worked like a charm and didn't harm the plunger or the motor.
Thus far, I haven't had a problem with the "big cam" feeling after a cold startup, but I will know for sure in the morning. With the IAC as nasty as it was, it would be no wonder why I was having idling issues.
I found these cleaning instructions online. It is for a Jeep WJ 4.7L, but it is all the same and was helpful since I had never done this before.
