Message: Help. I'm a paraplegic really wanting to get back into a truck and away from a minivan. I've owned a Ranger with a supercap since my injury which worked well with my old folding wheelchair but I now have a rigid chair (non-folding) and had to buy a minivan. I've looked around and thought that it might be possible to covert the rear doors of a Dakota Club cab and make them suicide doors. I need the doors to be suicide so I can reach around the seat and pull the chair in. Some years of the Dakota have pretty square rear doors that seam pretty wide. #1. What is the opening width of the rear doors of the Quad Cab (with and without the panels)?
#2. Has anyone heard if it's possible to convert the rears doors to suicide doors?
#3. Does anyone have any other ideas?
I really don't want to get into a full size truck and would rather be in a Dakota.
Thanks for your help.

Message: Jake - I'm sure any good shop can convert the doors for you. Cost would probably be the big issue with that.
If I can get my digital camera to work (still having issues) I can take some pictures of the doors open on my 02 QC 4x4. They open wide. But since you are looking at custom suicide doors, they can pretty much make them as wide as needed.
You may be able to seek assistance from some of the charitable groups to offset the cost of the modifications for you.
Maybe something similar to what monster garage did with a mercedes suv. If you are going custom, you could put a lift and enter at the back door and just roll into the drivers spot in your chair.

Message: Just the other day at the gas station I saw just what you are describing, the rear door opened backwards all the way (180 degrees) on linear acutators. The driver was also paralized. I just had to check out his setup. He opened the front door then pushed a button on the dash and the rear door opened and his wheel chair slid out on a sliding platform. He said he did all the work himself. This was on an 05 Dak.

Message: Ask Chrysler Corp. They have a program for the vans. They might have one for truckkies.
