Subject: C&D SUV Comparison IP: Logged
Message: Car and Driver had a 'Rock Hopper SUV' comparison in April's issue. A Jeep Cherokee with our beloved 4.7L got second place. It was described as having 'dismal' fuel economy, but who buys a V8 for mileage. Of course, C&D tests the vehicles in all conditions, not just off road capability. Nice to see our 4.7L performed well in the Jeep.
Results of test:
1. Nissan Xterra
2. Jeep Grand Cherokee
3. Toyota FJ Cruiser
4. Hummer H3

Message: Odd... they did a comparrison a while ago and I think the cherokee won..it had a hemi...it was compared against the large SUVs (ford expendition, toyota land runner, some others, can't recall exact models).. maybe they moved it down the size list with the introduction of the commander??

Message: That was a joke of a comparison the H3 was the best for off-road use yet they said it was bad on the road so it got last? I thought it was a truck test not mini van comparison the H3 should have won.

Message: I read in the article that a Jeep Cherokee with a Hemi and Quadra-Drive II would have put the Jeep well over the $30K mark and C&D wanted to keep the price under $30K, so they 'backed down' to a 4.7L with an admittedly less capable Quadra-Trac II.
In April of last year C&D did an off road comparison for 'Rock Climbing SUV's size M' and a Jeep with Hemi and Quadra-Drive II won that one. I can't remember exactly what it competed against.
Yeah, the H3 won the off road part of test, but in my opinion is too heavy and underpowered with the 5 cyl.. I don't think I would want one as a daily driver. Just my .02 cents!

Message: cj you should read the article you retard, it's a off-road comparison so the truck that is the best for off-roading should win. I agree the H3 is underpowered and GM also knows, that's why late 2007 it's getting the 5.3 and there is a good chance the Colorado will get the 5.3 as well.

Message: Yeah, they should definitely offer the 5.3L as an optional engine in the H3. Is that true that the Colorado/Canyon might be getting the 5.3L in the future? I'm not a big GM fan, but that sounds interesting, and would offer more power then our Dak's currently have (if DC would just put a Hemi in the Daks as they seem to put it into everything else!) Thanks in advance for any reply.

Message: Good point. I've been wondering that for a long time. How about a SRT Dakota? I could use the 345 or 425 horsepower.
2 guys that work by me have the new Ram with the redesigned front end, wheels, mds, etc. It looks incredible! Don't you think that they should help the dakota's looks, or offer a fairly rugged off road package? Or a decent performance package? Just thinking.

Message: Yeah, DC needs to do something (anything!) to help out the new Dakota. The new models are not very appealing to me, and to stay competitive they need to offer more power. And like Luke said, an offroad package or performance package would be a well received option that I think a lot of people would purchase. I like my Gen III way better then the new Daks. DC please give us a Hemi in the Dakota!

Message: For those that don't know or figured it out yet, their testing is a little weird. They use a predefined set of criteria that doens't always match the test.
JD is correct in a stictly off-road test, they should not comapare on-road capability and include it in the overall test result.
however, they should have labled the test differently.

Message: There is an Off-Road package available on the '06 Dak.
*** This DELETES the Rear Stabilizer bar****
Look for Optional Equipment Package "TRX-Off Road Group" on the Window Sticker.
At the 5 Star dealer I go to this package is $1200 and it includes:
ront and Rear Rubber Floor Mats
"TRX4 Off-Road" badge
Rear Extra HD Shock Absorbers
Delete Rear Stabilizer Bar
LT265/70R16 OWL All Terrain Tires
16"x8.0" TRX/TRX4 Cast Alum. Wheels
Skid Plate Group
Tow Hooks
Fuel Tank Skid Plate Shield
T-Case/Frt Suspension Skid Plate
Heavy Duty Service Group
Heavy Duty Engine Cooling
Aux In-Tank Transmission Oil Cooler
750-Ampere Maintenance-Free Battery
Anti-Spin Differential Rear Axle
4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes
What kills this deal is there's still NO locking diff's on this truck...
For a vehicle that hits $30,985 invoice price they should be offering it in the Off Road package.
Locking diff's should be standard on Off Road pacakges ...

Message: That pretty much sounds like my 02 QC.. heavy duty suspension (standard on QC). I just installed front and t-case skid plates this past saturday. Looking to fab up something from metal for fuel tank as factory is composite fiberglass/plastic. And 16x8 265/70R16 tires.
here's my car domain page with list of options.
