Subject: Torsion Bar Adjustment
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 1993 Dakota, and the Driver's side of the truck sits approximately 1.5" lower than the passenger side. It's only in the front though, so I believe it is a torsion bar problem. Any advice on how to adjust or fix? Also, is it reckless to get a bit of lift by adjusting both sides?

There's a bolt at the rear of the bar you can adjust the height with; easier to turn if you take the weight off the front end first. Raised mine close to 2" years ago with no problems.

You must do a wheel alignment after any such adjustment. The camber will be way off, affecting your cornering and wearing your tires prematurely.

It is recommended to get an alignment, but not required...it depends on how high you crank it up, and how much camber your truck started with. I actually had a 94 dakota a few years ago that I took to my local 4wd shop and had them crank for $20, they said they could align it for $60 more but when they tested the camber it was right on, so they didnt bother. I also had a tahoe that I torsioned up. I put 20K miles on it that way and had no excessive tire wear and no pull on the steering wheel.
