I'm no mechanic, but, if you're lucky, I think a fuel pump will start making a whining sound. You can hear it when you turn the key on. When it starts getting worse, you can hear it when the engine is running. If you're not lucky, like me, it will fail without warning - as it did for me with 14k on my 2000 R/T. I don't know what your symptoms are, but you might change out the filter. It's by far cheaper than the pump. The dealer wanted over $600.00 for the pump, and who knows how much to put it in. It was out of warranty, so I had an independent to the whole thing for $600.00. I had no choice, I was out of town when it happened.

Personally i've not seen a fuel pump just totally fail. For me the warning signs have been bucking, hesitation, rough idle and like symptoms when the fuel reaches a certain level. Happened on my old ranger and my old 95 dakota. Started around 1/8-1/4 tank then moved up toward 1/2 tank. Partly because I was too lazy and partly because I was under the impression they just fail without warning though as I've stated I've never had that happen.

Also, a bad fuel pump can cause misreadings on the fuel guage.
