Message: Any tire recomendations? I use my truck mostly around town, very little highway. I would like a fairly agressive off road tread that is decent on the street also. size 265/70 R16

Message: I just installed Goodyear Silent Armour. they are costly, but I bought them on sale. Really happy with tire tread size for off-road, but they are super quiet in town. 100km/h down freeway can't hear them. Ride nice, no complaints at all.

Message: I've been looking at the BFG ATKOs, but they are expensive. My truck is a 03 Dakota 4X4 RC SportPlus 4.7L 3.92 LSD 4WD. you seem to have a similar truck. My tires are currently 265/70 r16. Do the 265/75s you have fit with no problems? Does it change gas mileage? Does your speedometer still work correctly?

Message: The 265/75/16s will fit with no problems, I did crank up the torsion bars for an additional 2" of lift, it doesn't hurt and looks better.
I have superchips so I can calibrate my speedo for larger tires, but the tirerack chart indicates the speedo would have only changed by 4mph at 60mph anyways.
As for MPG I have not noticed any change, then again superchips leans out the air fuel mix a little which should net me better MPG with less fuel being injected.
I don't think you will have any problems going up to the 265/75/16s. You would only be increasing your tires by 1" in diameter.

Message: My 98 Dakota came with the good looking Good Years. After sliding through two intersections, brakes locked, I figured I wanted tires up-to the brakes, so I got Bridgestones. They gave me around 30,000 more miles life than Goodyears.
The best; ride, stopping, life? Michelin. Got 168,000 miles out of a set.
Buying tires for looks is another story.

Why step down to 75 width when you already use 70 width tires? The lower the second number, the wider the tire-- that's where your aggressive look will come from. The 265 height of the tire on a 16" rim looks good--- but the width of your tire is what most people will be looking at.
70 width is great in the rain-- I've had a lot of people complaining about the ever-so-slightly smaller 75 width. Could it be the tread? Most likely.. but hope this info helps anyway.
Oh yea, make sure to check out Dunlop's Rover RVXT tire. It comes in 265/70 16's.

Message: The 1st number is the section width in millimeters. The second number is the sidewall height percentage of the width. So a 265/75/16 vs. 265/70/16 is just as wide, and a little taller. The 75 series is approx. 32" tall where as a 70 series is approx. 31" tall but with the same section width of about 10.4".

Message: sorry, but 75 and 70 are not the same width. You can go to pepboys and measure their tires if you want to see for yourself.
The First number (265) relates to the height of the tire in relation to the actual wheel size (16"). The Second number is the tire's width.
That's why Corvette's wear 215/30Z/19's (or something along those lines) Go see how fat a Vette's rear tires are and then you will see that the Second number (in the Dak case 70, or Vette, 30) represents the tire's width (how much rubber is on the pavement)

Message: Sorry Jeep Liberty, greg2 got it right.
I made sure I did not loose and width when I changed from the P265/70R16 to the LT265/75R16.
I wanted aditional clearance without loosing footprint and the 265/75R16 did just that.
Check the site Android287 listed.

Guys I swear to God-- if you used to have 265/70R16's and changed them to 265/75R16's, here's what would happen: Your ride height would be the exact same. 265=265 so that is settled. Your footprint would be slightly less because 70 is wider than 75.
With the tire size swap you mentioned in the "quotes" above... not only did you maintain the same ground clearance, but you now have less rubber on the pavement.
I know 100% totally sure FACT guys. WHen you get a free chance go to Pepboys (or any tire store) with your tape measurer. This way you can see a 265/75R16 side by side with a 265/70R16. I can see the width difference with the naked eye, but when you use a tape measurer, it is obvious. 70 is wider than 75. and going from 265 aspect ratio to another 265 would not yield any more ground clearance.

First number is SECTION width in millimeters. NOT TREAD WIDTH.
Second number is the aspect ratio, is the % of sidewall to SECTION width.
Third number is obviously rim size in inches.
Keeping the same secion width but lowering the aspec ratio makes the tread wider, but the largest point of the tire stays the same.
265/75-16
265 * .03937 = 10.43 (Roughly 10.5" wide tire)
10.43 * .75 = 7.82 (7.82" sidewall)
7.82 * 2 = 15.65 (two sidewalls per tire...)
15.65 + 16 = 31.65 (roughly 32" tire)
265/70-16
265 * .03937 = 10.43 (again, roughtly 10.5" wide tire)
10.43 * .7 = 7.3
7.3 * 2 = 14.6
14.6 + 16 = 30.6 (roughly 31" tire)
Feel stupid yet?

I would have to agree that second number is the sidewall height (based on a percentage of the width/first number).
Also...just as an FYI...
A stock 2003 Corvette ZO6 tires sizes are (based on Tirerack.com's database):
Front: 265/40-17
Rear: 295/35-18
Which would explain why the rear tires are much wider than the fronts...and also have a lower profile.

Message: at least we had an open-end debate on the subject. Sure, I was wrong, but I like this site a lot better than jeepforum.com... where 49% of Liberty owners are soccer moms shuttling around little kids which would be a much better idea in a mini-van or even an SUV with more space, like a Chevy Equinox....... then the other 49% are estrogen pumped men that insist they need 4-Hi engaged when it rains. Only 1% are hard core and then there's guys like me somewhere in between.
I'd rather be called a dummy by Dakotas then be crowned KING by the Liberty crowd because I am the only Jeep Liberty owner that drinks beer, doesn't wear a bra, and 'adjusts' myself while driving.

Message: back to tires....
the bridgestone Dueler REVO's seem to get good reviews.
I hear Kumho AT's are actually pretty good also. They don't look very aggressive but seem to perform pretty well.
Also, i hear the same about the walmart BFG Land Terrain's.
Can't beat a good BFG tire.
Tires for Less sells Sport King Radial AT's that are supposedly made by BFG. they're like $80 per tire.
maybe worth a shot
