Subject: 01 4x4 Clunking noise IP: Logged
Message: Have 01 SLT 4x4 4.7. A while back, I engage the 4x4 after spinning tires on ice (4x4 light came on). When I did and attempted to pull out, I had a loud clunk which felt like something was binding up under the truck. Sounded pretty bad. After that, I tried to engage the 4x4 while at a low speed. It went in fine as it did the first time. No clunks until I attempted to turn, then it clunked and felt like it was binding. I figured I would just not engage the 4x4 and fix it when the weather warmed up. Now, while in 2wd I can hear a constant clicking noise at low speeds coming from under the truck at about 20 mph and under. The truck only has 28,000 easy miles on it. 4x4 was used rarely, only in snow / ice surface, never on dry pavement. Is this a CV joint problem or transfer case problem? I plan on getting under there today and looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Message: Probably wouldn't hurt to check your transfer case fluid; it may be either old or very low.

Message: "4x4 was used rarely"
We need to engage the tranfer case about once a month to keep it lubricated. Many system like ours have locked up or been damaged by rarely using them.
