Subject: P0455 code? IP: Logged
Message: So I start my truck up after work today and the check engine light stays on. Restarted engine and still had the check engine light on. Truck is running fine, and I drove it home 35 miles with no problems. The light stayed on the whole time. I'll call Dealership tomorrow.
I got a code on the odometer of 'P0455' then 'P-done' after turning ignition on three times. Anyone have a clue as to what this could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any response!

Message: check the associated hoses on the charcoal canister under drivers door. they have been known to crack and split at their connections. disconnect neg battery terminal and turn key all the way to start for 30 secs, drains diodes and clears codes. reconnect battery and let idle for 2 minutes without touching throttle, computer has to re-learn idle circuit.

Message: Thanks for the advise guys! I will definitely check the connections to the charcoal canister and reset PCM tomorrow morning (wish I had a garage so I could do it tonight). I found some other info online and most of it referred to the P0455 code as 'A large Evaporative Emission Control System leak has been detected' and mentioned either gas cap or charcoal canister connections as possible culprits. Thanks again for all input and if anyone thinks of anything else it might be I would appreciate your advice.

Message: I beleive the problem is solved! I decided to not pu$$ out just because it is dark, cold, and wet here, so I rechecked gas cap, then crawled under the truck (in wet grass of course!) and pulled the hoses off the charcoal canister. They didn't look cracked, but one seemed to pull off awfully easily, so I trimmed about 1" off each hose and reinstalled (seems to me like they should have some sort of hose clamp on them). I then took off the negative battery terminal, and turned ignition on for about 30 seconds, turned it off and reconnected the battery. When I started the truck I had NO Check engine light. I then checked for codes and all I got was 'P-done'. I drove the truck around for a bit and still no light! YEAH!
I want to thank everyone for the quick responses to my problem, I couldn't have figured it out myself and probably saved at least 1 hours worth of labor at the dealership. Plus now I can sleep tonight! Thanks again guys! You Rock!

Message: Jason,
When you say you removed and replaced the gas cap, do you mean you bought a replacement cap? If not, your old one may appear to fit snug but that still may be the problem if your code comes back. Mine did the same thing but I bought an aftermarket cap and it solved my problem. Do not get one from the dealer as it is the same one you already have.
Just something to keep in mind if the code comes back. Once you disconnect the negative cable, it seems all codes that were associated with an emission leak will disappear only to come back in a day or three. I'll keep my fingers crossed you don't have to post again for this problem.

Message: Gas cap is most likely the problem as so many others here have suggested. I have replaced my cap 2 times now in my 113k miles because of the problem. Seems they "crack" within the cap itself and is not noticable to you on the outside, still clicks when you screw it on and all.
I am suffering from this problem once again as of about 4 days ago but it is not affecting my truck right now. I am figuring it to be dry-rotted hoses on the canister this time since I am at 113k miles now. I hope it is cuz I am getting tired of replacing gas caps.

Message: Hey all! No I didn't actually replace the gas cap, just made sure it was on properly. I guess I will see if the code comes back or not. Hopefully not! If it does then I will buy a new gas cap. This kind of stuff makes me miss older vehicles. You could drive them around with a rag stuffed in the fuel filler with no problems!
Thanks again for the help guys!

Message: had a similar code on my LHS. ended up being the hose that connects to the intake manifold.
ironically after the garage inspected it. yeah. not suspicious at all. took about 3 weeks for the code to clear on it's own after i put the hose back.
good luck

Message: Well, even though I got rid of the code, I decided what the heck and bought a new locking gas cap and put it on. I also crawled back under the truck and put some hose clamps on the two hoses on the charcoal canister (not too tight as the hoses attach to plastic nipples). Might be overkill, but what the heck! Still no codes and drove about 10 miles today. Thanks again for all your input, hopefully my problem is solved.

Message: Right on guys......thanks for the advise! Drove around all day with no codes! Even beat on it some, man these trucks can be fun with a V8, manual tranny and a LSD rearend! I'm jealous of you RT owners and guys with regular cabs with V8's! My truck ways in at 5900# with all the stuff I have on and in it! Got to have a 4 door with two kids though!
This site is great and thank you once again for all the info and help!
P.S. GraphitDak- You still have the best QC I've seen! Performs awesome! Keep us posted on the Duster project.
