Subject: extended warranties? IP: Logged
Message: Any of you ever purchased an extended warranty not at the time of a vehicle purchase through a dealer?
We purchased my wife a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am in 2004. We purchased a 2/24000 extended warranty as that was all the dealer had.
The vehicle is about 4k miles aware from this extended warranty expiring. We still owe about 2 years on the vehicle.
I have been looking around at getting another extended warranty to cover at least 1 year PAST the term of the loan (so 3 years). In searching, I found alot of places offer extended warranties. I have gotten alot of quotes for coverage but not investigated the companies providing those quotes yet.
Can anyone recommend a good reputable company or recommend those to avoid?
2001 Grand Am 44800 miles.
So far in researching I've found the following helpful.
1. pay attention to the deductible - per visit
2. payment plans (what % down and how many payments to pay off the rest)
3. Verify shops will accept warranty coverage (they pay via credit card via telephone).
4. Some companies only cover if it was under original manufacturer warranty.
5. Some companies require an inspection.
6. Read exclusions - found 1 vendor that will not warrant a vehicle with ANY "modifications". Website did not define modifications. Same vendor also will not warrant a vehicle that is used for towing unless a FACTORY towing package is installed.

Message: Dan,
When I bought my '01 Dak in '03 and financed it thru my Credit Union, I purchased an extended warranty through a company called Intercontinental Warranty Services Inc. The warranty cost approx. $1600 and I paid an extra $110 for the guaranteed cash back option. With this option, if I don't use any part of the warranty, I get a full refund of the purchase price, minus the $110. My warranty expires 31 March of this year and so far, I have not had to use the warranty so I'll be getting my money back.
Their phone number is 800-333-3028. I do not know if they deal one on one, but it is worth a try. Hell, my credit union sold me the policy thru this company so they definitely are legit. My credit union would not sell something they don't stand behind. I've been with them for over 20 years and never had a problem.
Hope this helps.

Message: another good resource is the BBB. just go to the BBB website and you can probably check out your prospective warranty provider.

Message: Yeah, once I narrowed my search down based on cost, availability, and a few others, I planned on checking out the company via the BBB. I love the BBB it's a good thing.
AAA has provides extended warranty services. It's been the highest cost per years covered.
