Subject: Stock exhaust pipe size on '98 dak?
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm looking to replace the muffler on my 98 dakota 5.2 4x4. Does anyone know what inlet and outlet I should have on the muffler? I was going to go with a 3" inlet and outlet. Is the stock pipe that goes into the stock muffler 2.5" or 3"?

Both my 98 and my 00 had 2.5" exhaust. The 98 was a 3.9, and the 00 is a 4.7.

Hope that helps...

Unless you spend a serious amount of time above 3000 rpm, be careful going to 3", especially if your internals are stock (3" single on my LA 360 killed the low end - went back down to 2.5", much better now).

Mine was 2.5" stock on my 2003 4.7

Now I have DUAL 2.5" pipes. Thought I'd experience a loss of grunt but I don't think I lost a single ounce of bottom end and gained some top end.

As long as you maintain good flow...

A properly tuned dual 2.5" will maintain better low/midrange velocity than a single 3" (especially with an X-pipe) - remember, each cylinder bank is mainly seeing the pipe diameter, and exhaust pulses only come one at a time regardless of how many pipes you've got.
If it were me I'd just swap in a better flowing muffler and be done with it. Duals on a stock(I'm assuming) 5.2L 4x4 seems like overkill to me, but what do I know.
