I own a 95 modle dakota with about 200K miles on it. Sure its seen better days. But I've noticed when I launch off from a stop that I hear a clunking noise up front. Any Idea what it might be?

Its a good possibilty your ball joints are worn out. i just replaced my uppers because of a clunking noise.

Does that also cause excessive tire wire??
I've noticed my front end has a pop also when from a start.
But, I took my truck to the local repair shop for a front end alinment and they stated that theres was know need for new balljoints.
Yeah I was going to get mine replaced but is 968.00 worth it???

I also had that same clunk on takeoff, and the upper ball joints were the problem. There was another clunk as well, however. Or rather, I thought it was all related. But after I replaced the ball joints, the other clunk was still there. It sounded like it was coming from the same front-end area, but I finally found that the transmission housing was so close to the cross-member (1/4")that it was hitting it when torque came on. It also clunked going over some bumps. I'd never have noticed it, but the corner of the tranny housing was worn shiny. I wedged a thin piece of hard rubber in between, and voila! No more clunk! Hope that helps.

Has anyone had a problem with the "Check Engine" light coming on?? I've got a '97 dodge dakota club cab v8 engine. When I check for the code ,it pops up with "12".
Does anyone know specifically what this means?
