Subject: Help! BIG PROBLEM??? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I have a 98 Dakota (all the specs are below). Today I had to drive our to Fond Du Lac (about 78 miles frommy house.) On the way home, I used the cruise control, and it was set to about 70mph. About every 2-3 minutes, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, the truck would shift, the RPM's would go up 500 or so, and then kick back down...all in about 1/2 - 1 second. This got REALLY annyoing. on the way there, it did not do it (i was not using the cruise, but i have a "steady" foot...). Any suggestions?
Also, when I start from a stoplight, 3 out of 4 times my truck has problems getting itself into 3rd gear. It shifts from 1st to 2nd fine, but then shifts from 2nd to 3rd, then back down, then up, then back down, then up again, and finally it will stay in 3rd. It has been doing this for about 2-3 months, but i thought nothing of it at first. It just started doing it with the cruise.
Let me know any possibilities, I've only have the truck for 5 months, and I have put about 8,000 miles on it...i do not know the history for tranny fluid changes, but I am probably gonna ave it done monday or tuesday and have them check for junk in the fluid. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance!!!

Message: It probably isn't shifting down a gear beause then the RPM would go up about a 1000. Sounds like the converter is locking and unlocking, this could be caused by the brake switch being out of adjustment, (to sensitive), because every time the computer sees a input from the brake switch it unlocks the converter. Hope this helps.

Message: ok. i guess i typed it wrong...it doesn't actually "shift" but it feels like i'm "floating" for that 1/2 second...if it was the brake switch, wouldn't it tell the cruise to shut off and flash the brake lights? and also, that wouldn't explain the problems shifting while starting out...
thanks for your input, but I don't believe it will help...8-(
Another thing. I was reading some previous posts about this same problem, and someone said it IS the TPS...Throttle Positioning Sensor. Any input on this?

Message: Ahh, yes you are right forgot about the cruise being on. TPS not to sure, haven't seen much problems with them but I work at a small dealer. It would be a good idea to get the fluid changed and the bands adjusted though, as you pinted out you will be able to see if there is any junk as well.

Message: I would definitely start with the simplest thing first, check that fluid. If you do not know the history, change it out. I just became a Dak owner a few months ago and mine had 60k miles on it. The previous owner, (my brother-in-law), passed away so I had no idea of the history. I changed all fluids and that straightened out my shifting problems on my 98 5.2 2wd SLT.
Good luck, let us know what you find out.

Message: Thanks guys...I'm gonna have the fluid changed sometime and have them take a look at it (for parts from the tranny...) and see if they find anything. If they do, I'm sad to say I'm gonna have to trade it in and go with a RAM...i need something with a little more room (and a V8)...again, thanks, and anyone else's input is also appreciated...!!!
