Subject: Fram versus Wix Oil Filter IP: Logged
Message: I have always used Fram oil filters and never had a problem with them but have read on this board that quite a few people prefer WIX. I changed my oil yesterday and bought a NAPA oil filter (made by WIX) for my '01 Dak, 4.7L CC just for the hell of it.
After starting and taking it for a drive, I noticed the oil pressure gauge was reading higher than it was with the Fram.
I haven't read anything about how the oil pressure was better with the WIX, just that it was a better filter but that appears to be a difference. Oh yeah, and no leaks either. Some were saying the Fram left some of the rubber gasket on the metal which wouldn't allow the newer filter to seal correctly.
Sound about right???

Message: Yeah, when I switched my truck over to Mobil 1 filters and syntheic, my oil pressure increased from about the 40 to about 50ish or so. I just prefer the Mobil 1 filters for the higher oil pressure.

Message: Fram filters are famous for leaking by pass valve. You made a wise choice switching. The important thing to remember is a lot of other filters on tne market are rebadged fram so should you deside to try something else again, read up on it so you know how it is built and what it is. Not all filters are rebadged.

Message: i've used both and prefer the Wix. as far as the gasket sticking to the block, make sure the old gasket always comes off and just put a light film of oil on the new filter gasket and you wil never have to worry about it again. it's not just Fram's that can do that.

Message: When I was in my early teens and just starting to work on vehicles, dad always said to put oil on your finger and run it along the filter gasket, so that was never a problem, even with the Fram. It never stuck, but then again, I've always changed my own oil, 'cept for that one damn time I took my wife's vehicle to Wally World and they stripped the plug. I've had friends who couldn't get their filter off after taking it someplace to change the oil. One place even said they torqued the filter on. I guess some people can't read directions.
Anyway, Wix seems good to me so I think my friend at NAPA has a new customer for oil filters.

Message: O'reilly's sells WIX too. and if you look at the O'reilly brand filter, it looks just like the Wix. i may have to buy one of each and cut them apart. the o'reilly one is about 2-3 bucks cheaper than the comparable Wix filter.

Message: I believe the O’Reilly brand is made by Purolator. At least that’s what the man at the counter said. I use WIX as well on the DAK and the O’Reilly brand on the Rodeo.

Message: Hey micron,
If you'd read what the guy said who started this post, he said he bought a NAPA filter (made by WIX), so thanks for stating the obvious.
Why do people repeat what others have said?

Message: hey Dumb,
I beleive Micron said NAPA "GOLD" filters are made by WIX!
NAPA has different lines of parts Gold being the best top of the line parts, thier economy line of filters is not nessasarily made by WIX.
Just because you get your filters at NAPA doesn't mean it's going to be a WIX filter, thier economy line of parts could be made by a cheaper company,,, maybe FRAM.........

Message: well he may think its made by wix being he said its just a napa filter. he never said GOLD now did he. so if he can clear this up. wix are the silver and gold. but the silver has a cheaper filter element. also heard wix dont make the silver one for napa anymore.
