Message: alright, heres the story
i had loud popping/cracking noises coming from my pass side when in 4x4 and when i turn
so, i tore it all apart and as long as im at it replaced the axle shaft seal because it had a slow leak
i have the CV shaft out, and everything seems to look ok. so im not sur eif its bad or not
what is a good way to be able to tell?

Message: Well . When it was still together, cranking the wheel all the way left or right, you can feel it by slowly spinning the tire as a rule. Other then that, now that it's out, Clean all the grease out if it and close inspection will reviel visual wear and slop. Really not hard to determine. Keep in mind, if you have any wear at all change it or be prepared to do the job over real soon.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Chances are that the cv joint is gone. I just had both mine done(3 months ago) and had noises just like yours when in 4x4 and turning. Are the boots around the cv cracked or split? Once the fluid leaks out from the cv they go after that. I think you have to take it apart to know for sure. Maybe take it to your local tansmission shop or garage you like and have then look at it. Given the year of your truck it is probably a good idea to replace them anyway while you have it apart.

Message: the boot is not cracked or leaking
ive had one side replaced, but ill be damned if i can remember which side it was and i cant find the sales slip
ill prolly rip it apart not just to make sure, if i feel motivated i should gank the ones from the 95 donor truck i still have sittin out back, i thought about stealing the whole axle so i didnt have to deal with the CAD on the 90, but the gear ratios were different, and i needed it running by mid november, so i ran out of time on that one anyway
now im basicly looking over the axles to replace anything worn so i should then have a almost completely different/rebuilt drivetrain
i still have to check out the whine in the rear axle
