Message: Very mild cam. Cast pistons are fine unless you plan nitrous or forced induction. Probably 8.5-9.0 compression on stock heads. It's a Mopar item, so stop by your local dodge dealer and get all the specs. Heck, ask them about pricing and see if they can beat Jegs.
For a stock replacement, that looks like a pretty good deal. If you're looking for a real performance engine, this probably isn't it. But if you add some Edelbrock alum heads, 1.7 rockers, and the right intake, it would be a fun street motor.

Message: that is just a shortblock. as .boB said, some Edelbrock alum heads and 1.7RR's and you should be good to go. you could even up the compression a little, somewhere around 9.5:1 - 9.8:1 with the alum heads it would less susceptible to detonation and could make some decent power.
300-400 bucks for the 1.7RR's and what 1200 for the heads?

Message: 5 speeds are nice. 6 speeds might be better, depending on what they are. The Tremec 6 speeds (T-56) have an additional OD gear. I wouldn't think that would be very helpfull in a truck. The 6 speed with the Cummins is a single OD and a "granny" gear first. That is the ideal truck 6 speed. But I don't think that will bolt to a Dodge motor.
If you can find a Dodge truck with a 5.2/5.9 V8 and a 5 speed, that would be a good place to get parts from. Good luck on that. About as rare as hens teeth.
Your best bet is to call Keisler and get their swap kit. It's pretty expensive. But you get all new quality parts ready to "bolt in" and go. They will be a good source for tech help when you get stuck, too. I've never used them, but they seem to have a good reputation with the muscle car crowd.
If you want to cobble together your own parts, be patient and diligent. The parts are out there. But it may take some time to get it all together.
If you really want to spend the bux, get a Richmond 5+1. Granny first, OD 6th. Very stout trans.

Message: Don't even think about rear gears yet. Use the rear gears to tune your final drive ratio. Your FDR is a function of trans gearing, rear gearing, and tire size. Decide on tire size and trans gearing first. Then install whatever rear gear tunes it to your use.
Finding the right vehicle in the junk yard is going to be tough. Over the years I've only seen one V8 5 speed Ram - and I had to special order that one. I'm sure there's hundreds of them around, maybe even thousands. But there are millions of V8 auto trucks out there.
Basicly, you're looking for any Dodge truck (Ram, Dakota) with a V8 and a 5 speed. The V6 has a differant trans, not as strong. And I don't think the Cummins trans will bolt up; but I could be wrong so be sure to check.

Message: what exactly do you want to do with your truck? that's usually the first decision to be made before you start a project like this.
are going for dragstrip racing? mud racing?(since you mentioned it was a 4wd)
street? show? if you know what you want out of it beforehand, it will save headaches in the future.

Message: The 5.9 only came with a manual transmission in the "heavy duty" pickup line, in the 94-04 rams.
You will NOT find a 5 speed 5.9 dakota or 1500 ram in the junkyard, it's a combo not offered by DCX. Hope this helps you to narrow your junkyard search.
Once upon a time, though, I did see one for sale, and all the RT guys were fawning over it...
