Subject: Broke down on the Expressway IP: Logged
Message: I got my 96 3.9 auto Dakota back from the trans shop today after having a new/used one put in. I noticed the check engine light was on when I went to pick it up. I asked about it, and he said thay ran a check, and it was the 02 sensor.
I had to go to Daytona which is about a 25 mile drive. I was on 95 going around 75MPH when all of a sudden it lost power. I had to pull off the side of the road, and sat there a minuete reving the motor up. It seemed OK so I took back off, and only got about a 1/4 mile before it did it again. Pulled off again, and sat there about 5 minuets, and took off again. I made it to the next exit, and was able to get it back home.
On the way I stopped at Advance Auto and asked them if they could run a test on it, and it did show the 02 was bad at the exhaust manifold. I bought one and made it home. It was dark by then, so I'm gonna change it out in the morning.
Will an 02 sensor make a truck run THIS bad?

Message: To answer your question, it's YES.
A 02 sensor feeds info back to the computer
telling it how rich or lean the engine is
running. If it's a bad one (worn out) it may be
telling the computer it's running too rich and
it turn the computer cuts the fuel down thus,
loss of power...
You're darn luckey you only have one.. The 4.7's
have four!

Message: I have 2 of them. I thought one went in on the drivers side exhaust manifold, but I guess I was thinking about my Jeep. Both are on the passenger side, one right behind where the 2 pipes are welded together, and the other one is after the converter.
Is there a secret to getting the front one out? I've busted my knuckles in great multitudes, but its not coming out. I cant gt a pipe wrench on it.

Message: Wood, AutoZone has a socket that you can rent or buy, it has a slit in it for the wire to go through. Just make sure and spray the old sensor with wd-40. Good Luck.

Message: PB Blaster works a lot better than WD-40.

Message: I tried for hours to get it out. Where its located there is no way to get a socket on it. I saw a 02 sensor flex wrench on line, but I figured it wood just break. That baby is in there. I called the shop that did the trans, and they said if I brought the sensor I bought to them, they wood get it in, even if they have to weld another plug in the pipe for it. Said it wood be around $50. I'll be there in the morning for sure. I hate paying people to do things like this, but I do know my limitations.
On another point, nobody works on my Sportster but me. I have found out when it comes to bikes, if you want it done 100% right, your better off doing it yourself.
