I have a '92 Dakota with the 5.2L. Something is shutting the computer down randomly (not temp or time related), and it takes 2 min. to 2-3 hours to reset. This happens roughly once or twice per day. While it's down, I have full dash electrics and it will crank fine, but no fire. The scanner shows all codes normal until it shuts down, and then the scanner goes blank as well. When the computer fires up again, the scanner also comes back. There is also a click from somewhere on the intake when the computer resets. I've replaced the computer twice - the first time it solved the problem for 3-4 months before it resurfaced, and the second computer didn't help at all. They were both rebuilts.
I have also replaced the crank sensor and the coil. Something I've wondered is if the 60-way plug into the computer has some issues and needs to be re-wired. Occasionally wiggling the harness at the plug resets the computer. But not usually.

Has anyone come across this before? I would greatly appreciate any serious suggestions. I've sunk about $2000 into this problem alone with no results, and I'm about ready to sell it for parts. A shame, because otherwise it's a great truck.

Have you taken a look at the most famous corroded 3 wires on the left fender?

there was a similar problem posted here where the pins on the harness that plugs into the computer were loose.

I had an issue with my old 95 randomly dying and cranking with no start. I finally tracked it down to being lose ground wire/pin at the PCM. when the truck starts, tap the pcm connector under the hood, if it misses or dies, check the ground there. I still have the wiring diagram from alldatadiy for my 95 if you think that may be helpful. the haynes manual may show grounds but i am not sure. You can also try requesting a copy of the pinout from a dealer.

I fixed it with some 5 minute epoxy. I unscrewed the wiring connector from the pcm, held the wires and my multimeter in to verfiy a good connection while my wife expoxied it.

Good luck, it was a pain to track down. I was testing the wiring all under the hood starting with the obvious splice , injectors, sensors on the tb, etc.

I appreciate the info. Yes, I have checked the wiring under the fuse box, and it seems fine. But the info on the pins fits with my own diagnosis. Dan's epoxy fix sounds like it has possibilities - I'd like to get that wiring diagram if possible. I'll try to track one down here, but if you could mail or fax it to me, let me know. email is tcdoerksen@hotmail.com Thanks!
