Subject: Fusible links IP: Logged
Message: Have a 1994 dakota with the 6 cylinder. Automatic trans, no towing package. Lately it has been blowing fusible links. When taken in to be fixed a different link blows about two weeks later. On the 4th trip to shop now, my local repair shop refuses to locate what is causing the repeated problem and just fixes the symptom (the blown link). Any help would be appreciated.

dude, obviously, they don't care, and YOU are simply wasting time and money with them. find a new shop, and make sure they have someone that is familiar with electrical repairs.

Message: Maybe I wasn't totally clear. I had figured out the needing a new shop thing myself. You attacked the symptom and not the problem much like my local shop. What I came here asking was if this was a common dakota problem? Do links blow due to age or mileage? How hard of a fix is it to do yourself?
Thanks for your reply though.
Any help is appreciated.

Message: Never heard of 4 differant fusable links. First off determine if these links are all part of one isolated system of wires. If it is, go to the main sorce because in order to fry 4 differant links the short needs to be prior to all of them. If these links are in seperate circuits then you got a wire harness fried and most likely it will be under your battery. Best I can say without personal inspection
So many problems .... So little time

Message: links blow because too much current is running through it. if it is rated for 30amp and 35 amps wants to go through it blows the fuse rather than something more expensive (safety feature).where is this link located? test the cicuit w/ an meter.has to be a short on either side of the link.

Message: What do you mean by fusible link?
There are FUSES, and there are fusible links.
Two different beasts.
Be more specific.

Message: There are alot of fusable links. Which ones blew? Most of the wiring from the PCM connects to fusable links before hitting the fuse panel.
Have you checked the fuses in the fuse panel against the manual or haynes or something to make sure you have the correct amp fuses in the correct spots? It could be one is wrong allowing more amps and blowing the fusible links on the back side. You could also have an issue with the alternator.
Or it could simply be that the fusible links are all crappy due to age and failing because they are not good links and the current is within spec.
Also is the shop refusing to find the issue or are they having problems finding it? Big difference. I spent about 15-20 hrs looking for an electrical bug in my old 95 dakota. Since it was intermittent it was very difficult to track. Electrical problems are sometimes the most difficult to isolate.
We need more info..what fusible links?
