Subject: Chirping sound from front belt drives
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been having a chirping or tweaking sound coming from from serp belt. I already replaced my P/S pump (sounded like a big air pump, hissing sound), replaced my tensioner pully twice (one pully and one as an assembly), the pully between the A/C and Alt., and now the water pump (installed a Flow Kooler). All that, I still have the chirp. It varies with RPM but becomes less noticable after running 20~30 mins (I guess after warming up).

Now, I speculate it could be the clutch fan? Does the clutch fan chirp or tweak? I don't think its the Alternator. A mechanic said if the bearings went then the heat would make the alternator charge up and down. The A/C free wheels so it couldn't that. Any suggestions would be great and appreciated. Now, I have to see why I have coolant dripping from the lower radiator hose/waterpump.

I have a 5.2L 97 with a similar noise. I have narrowed it down with my poor man's stethoscope(wooden dowel) to the fan clutch. It is a fairly inexpensive part to replace, unless you have someone else do it. I don't know that it will cause any other damage if it does go out.

I have the same problem and it is DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!! I haven't replaced any of the accessories yet cuz i don't think that is the problem. I think its just the belt. The noise is like yours, intermittant, I would think an accesory would make the noise all the time. I've had to replace the belt once already and the prob went away. It's back. I lost my belt at the track this year and it got a bit chewed up. I'm going to try that first.

Thanks for the quick response. I think I will leave the clutch fan and alternator as a last ditch effort. A guy who works in a motor pool at the base I work at, strongly suggested the belt. I just ordered a Goodyear Gatorback belt from summitracing. I had a squeal on my old Mazda 626 with a new dayton belt so I replaced with a goodyear belt, problem solved. (really nice belts)

If that doesn't work, I will get a new viscous clutch. I tried free wheeling the fan but it had nice drag with the engine cold. The seal base was clean. No silicone leaking out. There was no forward and aft play. Will the Mopar Performance clutch fan work on our trucks?

It's the bearing on the clutch fan. Had the exact same problem on my 03. Replaced under warranty.

mine was the idler pully bearing. the pully was still functional so i just sprayed some white grease behind the pully and hoped it hit the bearing. so far it seems less noisy.

As mine was getting worse even after first changing the belt, I noticed that the chirp was still there. After the engine was turned off, there was still a chirp for a few seconds as the fan was still turning. I spun the fan by hand and what do you know? BINGO. Got the dealer to pay for the first belt and the new cluth fan.

JB,

Did your chirp disappear after 20~30 mins of run time? I turned the fan by hand with the engine cold and I didn't hear anything. I shut off the engine and I didn't hear anything afterwards. I will bear this in mind. I don't have too many parts to replace. LOL!!! Thanks for the insight.

Lucas,

I changed the idle pulley between the AC and Alt. I can't image trying to get grease on the bearing. I did spray a light lube and thought it was the tensionor pulley. I'm on my third pulley. I do have an extra just in case.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I should be getting my new goodyear gatorback belt on Wed or Thu.

Yes,at first. Seemed to only do it when engine was cold. After a few weeks it got progressively worse. Didn't matter if engine was hot or cold. Dealership thought it was the belt at first, then they claimed it was the power steering pump, although it was obvious that the sound was not coming from there, then they had the balls to say that it was due to the cold weather at the time and that it was normal. They were kind of embarassed once I pulled into the shop chirping and all and I pointed out to them that it was the clutch fan. They changed it on the spot.

I've had a chirping for several months now, but mine only comes when the truck is shifting at WOT, @5200rpm.

Same as above for me too!

But SERIOUSLY. One similar story I can share. The Cirrus we used to have started chirping and driving the wife nuts. So one day I met up with her at a gas station (away from home I was in my work van) and started reving it with the hood opened. The chirp was very random. Well. One time while I reved that lil' V6 to redline the bearings grabbed enough in the idler that it shot the belt right off into shreds!

It was the Idler bearings. Swapped it out real quick and it was fine after that.

While the truck is running, lightly spray the belt with water, WD-4O,etc. If the noise changes it's the belt.
