Subject: What's the best shock? IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking to upgrade from my stock shocks on my '03 4x4 Quadcab. I've searched old posts and found alot of guys are using the Monroe Reflex's and Edelbrock IAS's. I'm looking to spend around $75 each. Rancho, Bilstein, Pro-comp all seem to be suited for on/off road use. I'm looking for the best on road shock since I rarely go off road.

Message: Either the Monroe Reflex or Edelbrock IAS montube would be my choices! I've actually used both on my '99 regular cab 2wd (have the Edelbocks now). If you can live with/want a firmer ride, go with the Reflex. If your driving may involve rough/choppy, potholed and cracked roads, get the Edlebrocks.
Reflex: Lower price, firmer ride and handling!
Edelbrock IAS monotube: Urethane bushings and
boots, softer ride,
sharper powdercoated
finish- no rust!

Message: My vote's with the Monroe Reflexes. Have them on my 03 QC 2wd and wouldn't think about changing to any other shock, 1000 X better than the stock cr@p!

Message: I use the Pro Comp ES9000, they were much better than stock and are a really good shock definitely an improvement in ride and handling. They were only a little over $100 for all four.

Message: Running the Edelbrocks makes a big difference in rear end handling on mine. Mine weren't worn out when replaced, just got tired of the stock shock valving not working well with the spring rate.

Message: I have a set of Rancho RS500's on mine. Excellent shock for all around use. Better than a Monroe? I don't know, never used them on a Dakota. Sure is a vast improvement over stock, though.

Message: I have a set of 5000 (I think) series performance Ranchos on the front of my Dak. Picked them up off truckperformance.com for $36 on sale. Made a huge different over stock shocks. I didn't realize how horrible the stock shocks were until I replaced them. I need to replace that back ones, but I'm satisfied for now.
Blistens are also good.. Whatever your wallet says "yes" to should work fine though.

Message: After an extended search on which ones to go with, I narrowed it down to looking at the same two sets you are looking at and I went with the monroe reflex shocks.... I cant say how they compare to edelbrocks, but I really like how they feel.

Message: Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to go with the Edelbrocks. I'll have to wait until next month though, spent too much on the truck in the last few weeks!

Message: Summit had the IAS "twin tubes" cheap on clearance a while back when I got them. Not sure why they cal them that though, its seems to be one tube with a boot like the pricier "monotubes" everyone raves about. Might be worth checking out.

Message: Monroe and Ranchos As I read about them are both made bt tecnotic?Spelling, And are discribed as In operation the same. Also near as I can tell there built the same with the exception of the rancho having heaver duty seals. There may be other internal differances but I haven't discovered them as yet.

Message: Hi, Kowalski!
Try this short article-- It shows the difference:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/sub_care_sat/1272396.html?c=y&page=2
In a nutshell or if the link doesn't work: "Twin tube" shocks are called that because they have a separate oil reservoir (with a low-pressure gas charge) surrounding the main valving body. "Monotube" shocks use a single tube that contains the valving assembly along with oil and a gas charge of much higher pressure than the "twin tube". This makes the shock more effective at damping spring motion without oil aeration (foaming) and also dissipates heat much better as there is nothing surrounding the inner tube wall and insulating it. A softer ride can be the result of the monotube since stiffer valving need not be used to give better spring damping.
Most higher end shocks like Edelbrock's IAS (the more expensive $80 models), Bilstein, Gabriel's Max Control, and KYB are the monotube design, and due to the better heat dissipation they usually last longer than twin tube designs.
They are also often visually different in that Monotubes usually have a "slimmer" body with no "bulging" to contain the oil reservoir. If you can, compare the appearances of the Edelbrock IAS monotube with that of Edelbrock's lower-priced twin tube and you'll spot the differences in shape.
Hope this helps!

Message: Thanks ! Had I known that I might have sprung for the pricier ones as I plan to hang on to this truck for a while. At under $50 for the pair shipped to my door I can't complain though, they still work much better than stock.
