Subject: Ordering...3.55 or 3.92? IP: Logged
Message: About to place an order for an 02 quad cab, 4.7 auto,LSD, tire & wheel pkg.
Won't do much towing but I do live in the mountains (9000ft) and do a fair bit of mountain driving. I like the power and acceleration of the 3.92 but am concerned about the difference in gas mileage on the highway.
Any comments are appreciated.
Thanks!

Message: i wish i would have got the 3.92's when i ordered mine. go with them!! at 60mph the engine is only turning 300rpm's higher with the 3.92's, and with the less effort used for exelerating, it offsets the mpg loss on the freeway. someone on here said he went from 3.55's to 3.92's and didnt loose any gas miledge.

Message: what is the best way of finding out whether I have the 3.55 or 3.92 rear-end. Also what is the best way to ensure that I do indeed have the sure-trac in the rear diff. How much limiting slip factor should the sure-tracs apply cause I can still burn rubber on both tires

Andy L:
What you call "possi traction" is available with either gear ratio. ReedJay already said he is planning to get LSD - a limited slip differential. Dodge refers to it as the "anti-spin differential."
ReedJay:
The 3.92s might be the best choice for you. I've got 3.55s and generally lock out the overdrive while driving in the mountains to keep the transmission from shifting too much. The 4.7 has a very peaky torque curve so it does tend to shift gears more than an engine with a flatter curve would.
On the other hand, I've driven the truck at high elevations a lot - including Loveland Pass at 12,000 feet. It performs just fine.

Message: I definitely wish I would have went with the 3.92 when I purchased my QC. It is only a 40 dollar option from the factory I think. It will cost you close to a grand to have a shop do it for you if you decide later. The 3.92 has a better low end torque from what I have heard.

Message: 3.92's without a doubt. I also highly recommend the option code Z5P-GVW rating 5900# (gives you 11x2 rear drums instead of the standard 9x2.5 drums) might help with the warped brake syndrome. Oh, this option is 55.00 M.S.R.P/48.00 wholesale. Good Luck!!!

Message: Have to agree with Throttle. I ordered the 2000 LB. payload for the same reason. Another plus is the tires are 235/75 15 Wranglers instead of 215/75 15 and are passable tires. The stock 215 Invictas are garbage. 3.92 LSD with 2000 Lb payload. Of course it goes without saying get heavy duty electrical and cooling. Cheap insurance.

I say get the 3.92's... if you get them and decide you don't want them, I am sure someone would be willing to swap their 3.55's with you..... butt, if you get the 3.55's and decide you wanted the 3.92's, you are looking at a large bill to have them swapped, then you will have to have the dealer do it to keep warranty! Message: My old dak 5.2L 4x4 cc with 3.92 gears and 31 x 10.50 on it got a pathetic 12 mpg, and that was all highway driving. Cruising at 70mph on the highway the truck was runnning at about 3000rpm, way too high for highway driving. Don't get me wrong it would smoke em any time, and it also had some nice grunt for towing (it pulled my friends 454 chevy home many times.)

Message: The gears don't change the motors HP rating, they do multiply the torque that is sent to the wheels and it is the torque that accelerates the truck. So 3.92s in effect deliver 10% more torque to the wheels. The higher (numerically) the gear the more the mulitplier. The tire diameter will also effect this ratio, The R/T's 28" tall tare combined with the 3.92 is turning the most RPMs on the freeway of all stock Dakotas, so a 4x4 with 31" tall tires can easilly run gears upward of 4.35:1 and still not turn anymore RPM on the freeway then a stock R/T. The place you will lose MPG is only at level steady state freeway crusing. Anything stop and go, or going up hills, is going to get the same maybe better mileage with the 3.92's or higher. The only other consideration with drag racing is you really don't want the truck to have to shift into overdrive just before you go through the traps, but an R/T can even go to the 4.56 gears and stock tires with a PCM upgrade and still not need the OD in the 1/4 mile.

Message: That 3.56 on a 28 inch tall tire will run about 3000 rpm when you try to cruise down the highway at 80 MPH. It will seem like a lot of RPM but it's really not that much compared to what cars used to turn before the advent of oderdrive transmissions. It's that same as having a 3.15:1 rear gear on a 60's musclecar, and that would be considered a tame gear back in the 60's.

Message: 300RPMs higher when going from 3:55 to 3:92.......What about 4:10s?
~15% more torque and 450 more RPMs at 60MPH?
Seems like the 4.10s are even a better way to go.
