 Subject: Water Leak in cabin

2001 Dakota .. I am getting a flood of water in the passenger floorboard when it rains. It appears to be coming in the firewall. Cannot find where the water is coming in. Any ideas?

Sounds like your cowl panel drains might be clogged up. The water usually drains down the sides of the firewall. If they're clogged with a bunch of leaves and things, the water could back up and come inside the fresh air intake for the a/c and down the inside of the firewall. Also, the water might get in the a/c housing as well.
Or it couldn't be coming from somewhere totally different. Water is a funny thing sometimes. Check for clogs first.

OK, figured out the cowl drains, and they are fine. Any other suggestions? As you can imagine, this is like finding a needle in a hay stack.

use a hose to direct water in certain areas and see if you can find out this way...
ps, are you sure its not a heater core leak which will put the coolant right where you say?

Yes, I'm sure it is not the core - just clear water on the floorboard.. If water is building up in the A/C housing, how would I get to that?

Water leak... UG! Did them for a while when I was a GM rep... Sometimes you get lucky and find it real easy. My methood is to dry the area thouroughly, removing the carpet and any interior trim. In some cases I sprinkle talc in the area especially up the firewall as far as I could get it. Use a garden hose in one SMALL area at a time. Sit there and wait till you see water coming in. One thing that people make the mistake of is spraying the water all over. Even if you see where it's coming in on the inside you may not be able to find out where it's coming in on the outside. When you test small areas you can narrow the leak down much easier. Make sure to check the floorboards! Keep in mind water can travel a long way. A leak on the drivers side may show up as a puddle on the passenger side. Again... water leaks... UG!!!! No wonder I was paid salary!

Thanks - did just what you suggested and cannot get it to leak now - so I am back to thinking it is condensation build up from the A/C. The humidity (and temperature) went down here (south Florida), so, I guess I will confirm that is the problem when the humidity returns and have to run the A/C. If it is that condensation drain, how do I get to it to unclog it?

Guess I should've asked where you lived first. Here in Minnesota there's not much humidity in the air right now.
Climb under the truck behind the passenger front wheel. Slide under the truck about a foot and look up along the firewall. There's usually a black hose coming out of the firewall, making a 90 degree angle straight down. You might be able to see it if you open the hood and look down.
You can clean it using air pressure. Or, if your lucky you may see the obstruction right at the opening. Insects (spiders, beetles, etc) like to lay eggs and make nests in the hose. Use a screwdriver or needle nose to clean it out.
If you can't find the hose, go to the passenger compartment and look up into the dash area right next to the firewall. You might be able to see the drain going through the firewall to the engine compartment. Off hand I'm not sure there's enough space to see it much less grab it.
Post again if you have troubles.

If it is not the AC unit, it might be the windshield. I have an '01 CC and had a bad water leak when it rained. The windshield was leaking at the top about four inches in from the corner. The water was running down the headliner to the pillar and down to the floor. I had to pull the rug and the kick panel and had my wife hose down the area while I watched inside. I also had a leak from the water from the evaporator blowing back along the drain tube and back inside the cab. Fixed both with sealer.

I just read 5 min ago on consumers guide site that the Daks have a leak problem from the roof seam.
The article did not have any repair info.

I also have the exact problem happened to me on a dodge dakota 03 i guess it is some comun on this tipe of vehicule . now my mechanic told me that he will have to remove the dash to clean everything good and seal all the possible inlets is it possible to do it without removing the dash panel . I will really appreciate any suggestion thanks a lot

I had a 1st Gen that the leak was indeed the roof seam. The dealership gutted the interior and used a hose everywhere to find it. I had to split the repair cost with the dealership. I wish it had been a recall item at the time.

have a 99 dodge since day one, this peice of &*&^*
truck has had this leak for years, Dodge made me
feel incompetent for bringing it back in several
times. Don't tell me they didn't know about this.
This is why I will NEVER buy another dodge, they
don't stand by their vehicles. Every car has
problems, it is what the maker does with those and
how they address them. Thanks for posting a
repair for this (WORKED GREAT and cost 5 bucks)

My water comes in through the handles on both sides
, I have a sun roof but seems to be dry under the
sun roof. The said once the channels are plugged but
wouldn't tell me were or how to fix it. 2006 Dakota
4 door , would take good offer about now ,,,,,,lol

I started having this problem in March, 2015 on a 2007
Dakota, so they still haven't fixed the problem, but this solution
was simple, easy to access, and can be repeated if the silicon
doesn't hold.

I have a 2006 Dakota and have had water on the passenger floor every time it rains hard. Today it was leaking through the little handle on the drivers side after a big storm passed over. I found the metal stripping along the top of door where the weather stripping is broke or rusted out on both sides of truck allowing water to flow in along that crack and onto the floor. Now I just have to finally figure out how to fix it. I had it in the shop a few weeks back and they just said bring it in when you see it leaking again. Dodge dealer should have been up on this problem.
