Subject: Decal removal IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know of a good way to remove glue left behind by decals and stickers on the body of the truck without removing the clearcoat? Will a rubbing compound work well? Thanks

Message: you could use alcohol or WD-40. i used WD on mine and it didn't harm the clear or paint.

Message: When I removed the 5.9 decal off the back and sides I 1st used a hairdryer and then used laquer thinner to remove the residue. Didn't hurt anything on my truck, but don't rub too much or too long. I just used a quick couple of wipes to remove the little which was left. I do believe they have a decal remover in auto parts stores too.

Message: There is a citrus based product call "Goo Gone" that you can buy from Wal Mart or anywhere else. There is another called "Goof Off" but i don't think it is as good as Goo Gone. It smells more like a paint thinner type solution where the Goo Gone has a citrus smell. Will not harm the clear coat or the paint.

Message: I don't like Goo Gone as well as Goof Off for around the house. Goof Off is some potent sh*t. I just use a good cleaner wax to remove sticker residue.

Message: I do believe I'll try WD40 first as I have atleast half-a-dozen half empty cans around my garage. If that doesn't work, I'll try Goo Gone and/or Goof Off. I was worried that Goof Off would strip the clearcoat (it smells really strong). The biggest thing I'm trying to get rid of is what is left the dealer decal on the rear. Whoever owned the truck before me tried to remove it but left all the tacky glue behind. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Message: For residue removal I've used "Sticker Shock", which is sold at Autozone, WD-40, wax and grease remover, even enamel reducer for the really tough stuff (it doesn't seem to harm FACTORY APPLIED basecoat/clearcoat paints). For dealer stickers, the trusty heat gun and WD-40 never let me down! Decals, pinstripes, and tape lettering all come off with a 3M product called a "Stripe-Off wheel", it looks like a round rubber eraser and canm be mounted on an electric drill (with an optional adapter)

Message: Hmm is it best to use the heat gun on it first to warm up the glue residue, then use the WD-40? Or is it best to spray on the WD-40, then use the heat gun?

Message: DON'T EVER use lacquer thinner or acetone on any painted surface unless you are looking to remove the painted surface. Those are the two strongest chemicals in the finishing world.
Paint thinner, bug and tar remover, goof-off, goo-gone are all safe to use on an automibile's finished surface.
How do i know this? worked for many years in a furniture factory and learned the tree of solvents from the most potent (lacquer thinner)down to the least potent (water)

Message: I just bought an 01 and would like to take the stickers off. Two questions that haven't been answered yet; will there be any difference in color between the rest of the truck and where the stickers were due to fading and should I wait until temperatures warm up to take them off? Thanks

Message: try removing one that's in the least exposed area. like maybe the lower door, if you have a Sport. or the tailgate, like the lower portion where dealers usually put their crap.
it's really going to depend on how the truck was taken care of by the previous owner/s. mine is outside day & nite, 24/7/365.

Message: Hmmm, lacquer thinner didn't hurt my clear coat at all. Must have gotten some cheap stuff. But it was just a fast couple of swipes. It may have been different if I had used some elbow grease and had rubbed it a bit. I've used WD-40 to remove labels off glass and wood. I'll try that next time.
