Message: Well I was driving down a highway today. I spead up to past someone but then backed off because I didnt want to cut them off. Then they slowed down and I stepped on the gas hard while the rpms were starting to slow down. WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN I HEARD THIS BIG BOOM IN MY ENGINE. My engine is still working fine but I was wondering if I could have broke my belly pan? This is the second time it has done this explosion sound in a 8 month period. I have an 03 3.9L Dakota, with exhaust, 10" round air cleaner, V8tb, and 180 thermo. What do you think it might be?

Message: maybe it just backfired. could have too much gas being dumped in to the cylinders and as it boggs down it finally ignites and BOOOOOOOM !!!! I doubt its good for the engine. could the timming be off? check your cap and rotor.

Message: You stated the BACKFIRE was in the exhaust. That being the case, The plug needed to have fired on the cylender that caused the backfire. If this is the case, the valves were both closed and there was no effect on your intake. On the other hand, If it was set off by a hot spot in the cylender, it,s possible a valve was open somewhat. This is not likely. Reasoning, there was no backfire through the intake. My guess is somehow you got a shot of gas to travel down to the converter and when you stepped hard on it you injected suficiant oxygen into the converter which is super hot and WALLA.... BACKFIRE. Question now would be how this could happen. How about an injecter that sticks open on rare occation > Just my thoughts
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Check the timing! I have a 3.9 too. Replaced the ditributor, didn't have a timing light, and tried to set timing by removing #1 plug to find tdc. Drove it up the street, almost the same scenerio as you did, and there was a loud pop under the hood. Stopped and a friends and checked the timing. Was at 2 degrees btc (not too bad without a light). Set it at 10 btc and it didn't do it again. I couldn't tell any power loss when driving it before or increase in power after it was timed.
