My father has a 93 Dakota and is having problems with Oil Pressure. Changed the oil and flushed it 150K miles. Would replacing the Oil Pump work? Or possibly bearings shot? I'm into Chebies but this is a PITA that doesn't go away. He can drive it sometimes for 100's of miles and then suddenly the oil pressure drops when you either rev the motor or after running for a bit. Replaced the Sending unit a few months back.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I had my oil pressure drop to zero occasionally and it would come back up when I turned the engine off and restarted it. Its a 318 with 122,000 miles. I changed the sensor..no good. I installed a mechanical guage and the problem was still there, which told me the stock guage was working. I removed the oil pan and found the pick up screen was about 75% blocked with metal particles. I cleaned the screen and installed a new mellon pump. I think the old pump was fine but might as well replace it while you are there, its only 26 bucks. The oil screen has a metal cover with a hole about 1 inch in the middle of the cover. This design is bad because it does not allow all the sludge/grit to fall back down into the pan but rather traps it under the cover and over time it builds up, leaving only about 1 inch in the middle of the screen clear for oil to pass through. When that last inch of useable screen gets blocked your pressure drops to zero. The stock guage will not tell you you have a problem until the pressure goes down to almost zero. I think anyone with a high mileage[100,000 plus] 318 engine, should install a mechanical guage[use a T fitting] so you have an early warning of oil pressure problems.

hey guys, I have a 92 v8 with a 5.2 in it and i have the same problem i let it idle for a bit and my oil light comes on and flashes with the pulse of the engine. But as soon as i give it some gas the oil light stops flashing and the pressure guage goes back up, but as soon as i slow down or stop it starts flashing again. Could you guys help me or might it just be the same problem? Mind you guys i do have 99,000 miles on it too. and just changed the oil like 600 miles ago. so if you could help it would be appriciated.

The oil pressure relief valves in the oilpumps on the 5.2/5.9/3.9L are natorious for sticking open. I replaced mine right after the warranty went out. Mine was doing it at 24,000 miles. The dealer never would replace the pump. They put 5 sending units on it and then they tried to tell me I had a short in my dash. WHen the warranty finally expired on the truck (36K) I bought a new pump and installed it myself and the problem was fixed. It never did it again.
