Subject: tps sensor problem

Message:
alright, so i keep having the engine code p0121 pop up in the past week or so and it is driving me insane because the problem is so hard to trace. first of all i have a venom 400 controler which connects to the map and tps sensors, but the i have had it for 2 years and this is the first time it came up, but i called venom and i am waiting for a response, also i have a fairly new (1-2 month old) 48mm tb from f&b installed which i heard that the tps sensor being tighted too tight might trip the code. finally i just had my transmission rebuild a week ago, although i cannot see how it links to this, but the problem soon arose after this so i thought i would mention it, does anyone have any solutions?

i read to check the voltage from the middle wire of the tps, but since i am new at this i could not get my multimeter to work, this may sound stupid, but does a) the truck have to be on b) does it have to be connected to the tb and finally c) where do i touch the negative (i just touched a ground) when checking voltage

i know that this is a lot off questions, but i really need to fix this problem, thanks for the help

A)ignition has to be on B)i think it has to be connected (won't hurt) C)i put the neg terminal on the battery. I just tesyed mine yesterday set the multimeter @1.5v. they say optimum setting .7v-.75v.

by "connected" do you mean the tps installed and wired up?
If you have the tps installed on the throttle body and the 3 wire connector attached. Turn your ignition to the "on" position. Take your negative lead of the volt meter to the battery. Back probe the wire connector(middle wire). With the throttle in the normal (resting) postion check the voltage. Then give it full throttle(butterflies open all the way) It should go up to 4 volts or something like that.
I don't know if that helps or makes it more confusing...sorry

no that helps, thanks.

But as to the problem, does anyone have any other ideas?

you try to replace your TPS? or try putting on your stock TB to see if it might be the aftermarket TB?

have you tried to reset the computer after putting on the aftermarket TB?

check the voltages on that tps. It should start off (idle postion) at around 0.6-.75 then as you give it more throttle (just use the cable linkage attached to the throttle body) the voltage should steadily climb up to around 4 volts. I am not positive on the exact volt. figures.

well...i found the problem, but not a solution. With the venom off (it has a switch) the tps voltage ranges from .9 (idle) to 7 (full), the higher numbers may have something to do with the new tb.
But...with venom on, the range is .9 to 9. This in and of itself may not be the problem. The real problem is that when i let go of the throttle, the voltage only settles down to 7 volts and my venom light still shows active (the venom chip is activated only when it senses hard throttle). Therefore it is this delay to go back down which is causing the problem. I do not know if it was always like this, but it is a problem now>>>> the funny thing is is that I do not notice any problems while driving, it still drives as good as the day i bought and installed the venom, which out of all the improvements i have done, is the most noticeable.

I would think that you would have gotten the code that for tps voltage being too high. Also that the truck would run bad.
It looks like the TPS is bad. The voltage should drop down below that normally...but with the Venom 400 I am unsure.

i just called the venom tech guy. He told me to isolate the problem. So i am going to clear the code, and completely disconnect the venom harness and drive it around for a while. If the code doesn't pop up, then I am going to send it in. If it does, then the problem is else where

I would think that "tps voltage was too high" would also go off, but like i said it seemed to work normal with the venom off, the thing is is that the venom does intentionally change the tps and map numbers in order to get its performance, so i don't know if this is how the unit is supposed to perform, aka how it did perform while it for the first 2 years that i had it, or if this is an internal problem

i keep ya posted

well i finally heard back from the venom tech guy. they found that the unit had a problem, they didn't know what it was, but they are sending me a new unit. (not bad for a unit that is 2.5 yrs old) so i hope it doesn't trip anymore codes

What kind of differences did you see with that Venom 400 thing? Did you see a miles per gallon improvement?

sorry it took me so long to answer,

ewraven--> i notice the performance of the venom 400 more than any of my other mods

Luke--> well ever since i have just replace my tranny, and now the venom problem, i haven't had a real good chance to evaluate, but no problems. i am unable to tell you if i experience any gains, however

it seems that all of my mods (48mm tb, 180 stat, volant intake, bosch +4 plugs and wires, and relocated iat) haven't been as noticeable in terms of hp, gas milage, or torque gains as i would have hoped. i haven't actually been dyno'd and the gas milage hasn't decreased even if my foot has gotten a little heavier.

the only two mods that I have really notice gains off of are my venom 400 module and my gibson split exhaust, but my mods have been so spaced out that I have no idea what why truck acted like stock. I know it was supposed to be 179 hp, im thinking im in the 230/240 range. if i went by the manufacture's gains on my mods, i should be getting around 280, but i highly doubt that im close to that.

an im still waiting to get the chip....its been about a week

well, i just reinstalled my new venom controller, and it works fine, no engine code tripping...

in other news, i just ordered some 20" wheels, ssbc rotors and pads, and some new subs...

is there anything i should know before i go about changing my rotors, ie bleeding techniques, etc? I was going to do it with home tools (no torque wrenches or speed bleeders), will that work? i want to be as cost effective as possible since the wheels set me back about 1.5 G's, and i already have to buy jackstands.
