Subject: fixed belly pan gasket - now what? IP: Logged
Message: I fixed my belly pan gasket about four weeks ago. I replaced it with a Felpro, and I used a 1/4" thich aluminum plate from Hughes instead of the stock steel plate. While I was at it, I installed a K&N FIPK, new spark plugs, and changed the oil and antifreeze. Now when I am sitting idle, now and then it sounds and feels like a cylinder is misfiring or something. It used to do this big-time before I fixed the manifold gasket. What's the problem here? Is my engine just plain dirty from burning so much oil for so long?

Message: Do you have the 318? If so, did you reinstall the plugs wires according to the TSB. Also check to see if you pulled a plug wire end loose. While you are checking your wires, make sure there are no rips in the boots that would alow spark to jump to the head.
Also, your computer has "learned" the oily condition. If may take some driving to get it to correct itself. I have also heard that the seafoam does wonders for cleaning a dirty engine.

Message: you can buy seafoam at advanced auto parts. Others say at autozone too, but I've never seen it there.

Message: I have the 318, and I reinstalled the plug wires according to the TSB which has the method intended to prevent induction effects. I put a little anti-sieze on each plug, and a little dielectric grease on each cap. It's easy enough for me to check them again, though, so I'll do that.
I used a bottle of Seafoam about two weeks before the fix - 1/3 in the gas, 1/3 in the oil, 1/3 down the TB. I have another bottle in my toolbox that I think I'll put 1/2 in the oil and 1/2 in the tb. DT - I got my SeaFoam from Autozone.
Curious - I took photos of my intake manifold with the busted gasket hanging out but I don't have any photos actually looking down through the throttle body. How would you get a flash in there? I never could tell if there was any oil in the bottom of the intake manifold by looking in with a flashlight, either, so I used some long-handled medical cotton swabs to poke down there and get a sample. The bottom of my manifold had a light coat of oil, but the really burnt stuff was collected toward the rear, which you couldn't see by looking down the TB anyway (too sharp of an angle).

Message: that's basiaclly what I was asking. I've looked down in there and saw a light coating on the bottom. didnt really look very bad. When I swapped the tb on my 3.9 to the v8 one the bottom of the butterfly's were coated blackish. a mechanical friend of mine saw it said somehting about it had run rich so I'm just looking into the gasket.
