Message: Depends on the year. My 92 has a floor shifter with vacuum actuation. Later models have a rotary knob on the dash.

Message: This is a 1998 model. Haven't looked at it yet. I really don't trust the electric version. Seen them freeze up in real slushy situations. Plus expensive if it goes out. Might have to go with a fullsize 1500 to get the manual shifter.

Message: Daks come in a variety of options, Gary. My 2000 Dak has a floor 4x4 shifter (which I prefer). I think the full-time AWD ones have a knob on the dash... at least all the ones I've seen do.

Message: I'm pretty sure the '98 was only available with the floor shifter. At least all the '98s I've seen have the shifter on the floor.

Message: I think 2001 was the cut-over to electronic 4x4 shifting. No more floor shifting knob after 2000...

Message: The 2000 Daks had a different floor shifter than the earlier models. It had a shift pattern like this: 4wd low, N, 2wd, 4wd hi. Earler models (like my 1998) have 2wd, 4hi, (move right)N, 4low.
Not that it makes a difference though, I just like the shifter better than an electronic switch.

Message: Modain was correct, the 2000 Dak's still had the floor shifter, while the 2001's utilize the electronic knob on the dash board. Hope this helps!

Message: the shift knob on my 98 Dakota doesn't seem to match what happens when I shift the lever. Can you tell me what the shift pattern is supposed to be?
