Subject: Convert To Rear Disks. IP: Logged
Message:
I Just bought a 1998 CC SLT with a 318. I am interested in converting to rear disk brakes.
Does any one know what year rear ends would fit under this truck?
Maybe one from a Durango?
Thanks,
C.J.

Message: You can save yourself a lot of trouble by just installing a set of SSBC rear discs, their conversion kit is about $600.

Message: 2003 Dakotas and Durango came with rear discs...at least as an option. You can source all parts from those or even buy all pieces necessary from the dealer and NAPA for under $600 and from what i hear its pretty much bolt on swap.

Message: I did find the info on the SSBC conversion kit but would like to use stock parts. The main reason for this is so I can find replacement pads an rotors from any parts store.
I talked to the parts guy at my local Advanced auto parts store yesterday and he said he should have everything but the mounting bracket and maybe the parking brake.
I spent $230 today replacing the rotors, pads and calipers for the front. I would not think the same parts for the rear would be much more then that. I would have to add the parking brakes and brake lines. The only problem I can foresee is if the brackets are available from Mopar and if my rear end has a place to mount the brackets.
I think I will try and call Mopar and find out if the brackets are available.
My 1998 Dakota came with Rear Wheel Anti Lock brakes. I do not think that would be a problem.
<< Well since there is rear abs, do you have to get different sensors or anything special like that? >>
The post from a guy who used the SSBC kit said the instructions said to modify the distribution block to add a little more braking power to the rear disks. He did not mention any other parts needing to be replaced.
If any one has a manual for a 2003 could you look in it and see if you can find out how the brackets mount to the rear-end? I would be much appreciative.
I know this would be a lot of work to replace something you rarely have to replace in the first place but I do hate drum brakes. And I think being able to have the rear brakes do a little more work should be a good thing.
Thanks for everyone’s input.

Anyone know why DC stopped?

Message: I dont know I looked at the dodge ram and seen many with rear disks. its hard to say. maybe it was over kill. could of been cost. maybe customers complained and wanted drums in the back. as I have heard many people say drums are better than rear disk. could always email dodge and ask them. I know my 03 stops on a dime with 4 wheel disk. where as my 95 ranger with rear drums took longer to stop than my dakota and that thing weighed less than my dak.

Message: you will always have more surface area for contact with drums as opposed to discs. my '00 QC has(i think) 13" rear drums and it does stop really well. i do keep the rear brakes adjusted too. i have 56k on it and still have all original brake components and no rotor warpage at all. in fact i still have about 1/2 of the pads left.

Message: if Drums are so much better than disks. why was disk brakes ever invented? further more in racing events they would use drums over disks. I have 37K miles on my dakota and my rotors are fine.

Message: I have owned an '01 CC R/T with disc/drum and now I own an '03 CC R/T with disc/disc, and even though my '01 R/T had upgraded PowerSlot rotors up front the '03 R/T stops a LOT better, there is definitely a noticeable difference.
