Subject: Headlights quit working; any ideas? IP: Logged
Message: I had just left the house and was a quarter mile down the road when both of my headlights just went dark. I cycled the bright lights switch a couple of times and got nothing. I then turned on and off the headlights several times and they still didn't turn on. The fog lights still worked, so I drove home with those on.
Here is a little history...
1999 Sport 5.2 liter 4x4.
I did replace the headlight switch with a new dealer bought Mopar switch just last month after my foglights quit working.
When I got home with no headlights. I swapped out the headlight flash relay and that didn't fix them. I then ohm'd out(tested) all of the fuses under the hood. I was halfway through the fuses in the cab fuse panel when I tried the headlights again. They came on when I tried them.
I have no clue and I would like to find out what happened because I'd hate to have this happen far from the house in the middle of nowhere one night.
Thanks for any info...

Message: Could have been a loose or corroded connection which were moved when you were checking them, therefore creating a better connection.

Message: I know your feeling about not finding the cause
of your problem ewraven.
My better half and I know a couple that have a
Dodge Mini Van they won't drive it at night any
longer. Their lights kept going off also..
The stealership can't find the problem either.
So here they are stuck with a DAY driver only!
How bad is that!

Message: Through the help of calling a Dodge Mechanic friend; I think I figured it out.
When I had changed the headlight switch in December; I forgot to lock the plugs on the back to keep them from coming disconnected. I kept meaning to get it apart and lock them with the little slider that they have on them. I just forgot.
The switch has two plugs; one for the foglights and one for the rest of the lights. When I pulled the switch out; the plug for the rest of the lights was nearly disconnected.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the problem.
RadioMan,
This friend of mine told me that these Dodge headlight switches go out all the time. You might try telling your friends with the minivan about that.
