Subject: strange oil pressure problem IP: Logged
Message: Sometimes when I stop quickly at stop signs the oil pressure gauge drops to zero and the oil level light (oil can with a drop) comes on. I thought this was because I was low and it was sloshing forward. I didn't have time to check it properly, so I added about 3/4 quart just to make sure I could drive home. The next morning I checked the oil level and it is actually just a hair above the full mark, and this is still going on. I replaced the sending unit about 6 months ago. What could be the problem? It runs just as it always has.

Message: this morning when I first started it up, It took about 15 seconds for the gauge to show pressure and the light was on for about half that time.
Could the oil just need changed? It is past due. Maybe it's too thick for the pump?
I just replaced the sending unit 6 months ago.

Message: I also have a 1995 318 4x4. I had the same problem. The screen in the oil pan was clog with sludge.I had the screen replaced and a larger oil pump put in. I now use 20-50 oil and havent had a problem. Its been almost two years. It cost me about 900$ to have it done.It was to much work for me to do it myself.

Message: You need to confirm what is actually going on with the engine. The only way is to get a 0-100psi pressure gauge $15 with a hose & clamps $6 and fitting $2 screwed into the oil gallery (where your oil sending unit is) and run the engine. Oil pressure drop off at idle is normal, but not below 5-10 psi. By 1000-1500 rpm you should have 30 psi minimum. GTXmag's comments of blocked pickup are correct, the oil pump can only do so much. Your engine milage, how you drive and how often oil was changed makes a difference. Weight of oil you use makes a big difference. If it's up for an oil change toss a can of engine oil flush in the crank case and let it run for a while before you dump it. Don't overfill the crank case to much because if the crankshaft beats the oil into a foam you loose pressure, the pump must have liquid. Then fill it up with the next heavier oil than you have been using. Go by the 1st number (ie 5W-40 to 10W-40 or 20W-40)that is the cold viscosity.

Message: when in doubt, always try a mechanical gage. the FSM says engine warm @ idle; minimum 6psi and minimum 30psi about 1500rpm.

Message: Stop driving it. Drop the pan, replace the screen and pump. Not a good thing to take your time with unless you want to do an engine swap.

Message: Ok, I found a pump from advance auto for $19.98, does that sound right? The screen is also $19.98. I realize that Parts from advance aren't the best, but this seems a little cheap. I don't want to spend a fortune on a motor with 204,000 miles. Do those prices sound correct?
And again, how hard is this to do?

Message: You are replacing the wrong parts.... trust me, take your air hat off of the engine and (while the engine is off) open the fins inside your throttle body and shine a flash light down it... you will see oil inside of your intake.. indicating that you have a blown belly pan gasket

Message: He said his oil was actually a little above the full mark indicating he was not low on oil which says intake is ok. He replaced the sending unit 6 months ago. DO NOT TAKE IT FOR GRANITE THE SENDING UNIT IS OK. Check it out with a michanical guage first prior to pulling your pan.

Message: oh i didnt see that part... before you start tearing apart the bottom end of your engine... check the dealerships for any recalls or service bulletin on this issue , then go to a mechanic, if they both tell you to drop the pan, then do so
