My 2001 Dakota has been having the usual front brake problems but I can deal with it. I haven't had the rears replaced since I bought it (85k), is there any signal you get if they go bad? And how difficult to replace?
Thank You

the best thing to do is pull the drum and check 'em out. they are not difficult to change. one thing i learned the first time i changed drum brakes, do one wheel at a time. that way if you forget where something goes you can pull the other drum off and compare them.

The other thing that I do with drum brake replacement is to set a rag on the floor and as I remove the springs, clamps, hold-downs, etc., I put the parts on it in roughly the same spot as they are on the wheel. That way, when I reassemble I have some idea of where they came off of.

there are a few specialty tools for removing and replacing the springs and hold down springs for drum brakes but i've never needed them.

Bernie, all the above is good advise. I think
the hardest thing to do with the entire job is
the final shoe ajustment.

You *may* want to buy a adjustment tool (spoon)
to adjust the shoes from the outside. There is a
little rubber cover for the tool to reach in. Be
sure to replace the rubber cover.

The VERY final step after the truck is back on the
ground is to back up a few times and hit the
brakes hard. That's to cause the shoes to seat
plus the self adjusters to do their job.

Get some help if you need it... No question is
too dumb to ask either when it comes to brakes
and safety.

I am a mechanic. even work at Maidas. Yes do one side at a time.
Get the drums turned, shucks are napa can do them. There is a
primary and a secondary shoe. one is longer than the other. be
sure to put them on right. Check your wheel cylinders to make sure
they are not leaking. Also make sure your axle seals are not
leaking. Or you'll be buy new shoes again.
