Message: This will be my 2nd. rear end in my 99' 4x4. The first time it was covered under warranty, and now I am past my warranty. I have the 355 ten bolt with the True-Trac rear end. The rear-end chirps the tires at every turn with very little gas, and now the rear-end is howling. I was told it needs rebuilt at a cost of $2,700. I can get a used complete rear end with 41,000 miles for $900 or one with 57,000 miles for $650. Is it worth it, or do I rebuild the one I have? Will the used ones last with new oil and the additive in it from the Dodge dealer? I hope I am the only one with this problem. This one place suggested using an additive from Chevy. Any help will do

Message: 2,700!!! You must be joking?
Detroit TrueTrac - $450 (The real TrueTrac, not LSD)
Gear Set- 160
Installation kit- 130
Total - $740
Somebody is charging you $2,000 for install? You need to find a new shop

Message: I'm having an 8.8 rear rebuilt right now. Adding a Detroit TrueTrac carrier (not LSD). These are about the prices I was quoted for the parts. We haven't discussed total cost yet until he tears it down and we see exactly where we're at. But I expect to spend about $1200 total.
Contact The Diff Shop, Colorado Springs, CO. 719-570-7830.
Last year I had the 9.25" differential rebuilt on my Dakota. New LSD clutch pack, new gears and bearings, etc. OTD was $781.

Message: Misty - while a rear end shop told me Dodge rears are known for carrier bearing problems in the rear around 80,000, yours seems premature.
99 Dak - many sources around for gears, try accuautoparts too. Sounds like you might be being charged over a grand on the high side. Good idea to get away from the stock LSD if its shot, I went with Auburn.

Message: I just had my pinnon bearings and axle bearings replaced at 58000. I was hearing groaning noise from the rear end. I took the pan off and the gears looked good but the fluid was a dark gray and had foamed up. put cover back on and put fluid in and took to shp. $800 to have the bearings replaced.

Message: Yes, the dodge rear is famous for eating carrier bearings between 60K-80K miles. If it's just the bearings, and halfway decent home mechanic can do it.
$800 should include a complete rebuild: Carrier and axle bearings, gears, clutch packs, seals, etc. Everything.
