Message: Whats with the .9 on the price of a gallon of gas? The gas station down the street sells gas for $2.399 per gallon. How do you pay for excacly 1 gallon of gas? How can they charge a price that is impossble to pay? Is it a tax thing?

Message: Like all other things for sale these days, the price will be .99, or 9.99, or 99.99. Ever listen to a JEGS commercial? Lots of $x99.99's. It's a customer gouging scheme that many people can't see.
Gas prices tend to fluctuate a bit, but the price for a gallon always ends with a .9 cents. Just round up.

Message: I read someplace a long time ago that the small amount of money needed to bring the price to a full dollar is called the "kibblesworth". Like already posted, it is a marketing ploy to make unsuspecting consumers think they are paying less. It would sure be much simpler and less confusing to state prices in even dollars, or drop the point nine from the gas price.

Message: You should have seen the face on the girl behind the counter when I demanded an explaination and exact change for exactly one gallon of gas.
I guess you can charge a fraction of a cent if you tend to buy things in liquid volume - like $10.00 worth please.
You would think they would quit such stupid stuff - are we that nieve?

Message: If you bought 6 gallons it would be 2.399X6 or $14.394 in which case it would be $14.39, rather than if they charged 2.40 for 6 gallons=14.4
You save a penny on 6 gallons of gas.
Look after your pennies and the dollars will look after themselves.

Message: I believe it has to do with the federal/state taxes. Last I knew the fed tax was $0.184/gallon.
State tax varies, some use whole cents some partials.

Message: It is just a marketing ploy. If a station had gas for $2.40 per gallon and the other said $2.3999, which would you buy?
Look at Wal Mart and every other place you spend your money. $11.99, $1.99, etc. Why not just round up? If it looks like you are paying less, even if it's just a penny, you'll buy it versus one that is a penny more. Rounding to the nearest dollar makes the price look higher, hence the $.99 on everything you buy.

Message: I think its a mix between a marketing ploy and tradition. Remember when a gallon of gas used to be 12 cents, I don't, I'm only 19, and I'm sure no one on here does either, but I worked at a service station and would always hear stuff from our elderly customers about how gas used to be that cheap. So back then that .009 would make a difference in the amount you paid for gas, and you would be happy to save a penny on gas. Just a thought I had.

Message: I remember a business or two that tried to make their thing that everything was in even dollar amounts. No x.99 stuff. None of them ever really took off or else we would still be shopping there.
