Message: The gain from flowmasters is minimal, I have seen dyno charts showing around 5-6hp.
The 40 series 2 chambers make the best sound for V8s and I have them on both my vehicles.

Message: yea it dosent seem like it would make any difference. But My dakota is a 3.9 V6, so how much more HP do you think it would bring, more with a bigger motor or more with a smaller motor?

Message: It is usually a percentage of your overall HP, the more HP, the more you will gain.

Message: HAHA, Assuming he was joking about pushing it down the track. Using a reference that Alky cars and top fuellers accually reley on the exhaust pulses to help push the car down on the ground and down the track. thats why their open header point out at the angle thet they do.
Not really something that you are going to get on your dakota

Message: K... here's the no BS answer. exhaust, and any mod, for that matter, relies on the basis of the structure it relates to. meaning, in laymans terms, the stronger the engine, the more % HP gain you'll get. exhaust, especially mufflers, ain't gonna do $hit but change the way it sounds. NOW< if you're talking a entire new exhaust system, from the head back, you'll see some moderate gains.
The Basis of HP AND torque, goes like this. Torque is what moves you initially, or Low end, while HP is what keeps you moving, or your top end. the engine, as it is, is basically a huge air pump. it sucks air in, uses it to burn fuel, then shoves it out. the LESS restricion to air flow in, and out, of an engine gains performance. think of it like this... you take one of those little straws that bartenders put in drinks... try breathing in and out of it, and imagine yourself as your engine. now, switch to a normal straw... you automaitcally will notice how easier it is for you to breathe, and how much less effort you waste, using a larger, free flowing straw. That same physics applies to an engine. the less energy it wastes pulling air in, and pushing it out, the MORE energy ( OR HP and torque) it can use and apply to forward motion. thats why cold air intakes, and removing catalyst works so well to improve HP. now, there is a double edged sword to all of this... increasing HP will somewhat kill torque.... like with R/T's adding a M1 intake. the runners on the intake are so short, top end HP is awesome, as it uses so little energy to draw in air, BUT low end torque suffers, as it is TOO easy to suck air in, and the vacuum needed for building torque isn't there.
JESUS that was a rant. I tend to get on those... but at least I hope that it helped you understand what it is you're after.
as for mufflers, go for one that produces the note or tone of the exhaust you're looking for. if you're looking for performance, yank off your Y pipe and punch out the cats, but I didn't say that was legal, so don't point the finger at me if you get caught...
