Message: well, there's only one true way... it involves welding and cutting.
THINK of Rust as cancer for automobiles. the more you remove, the less chance of its return... there are some chemicals, most are based off of Sulfuric acid, or Phosphoric acid... they will eat away rust damage to clean metal, but will eat everything else too. I'd cut out the major parts, use a high speed die grinder to wire wheel and polish the remaining surface, front and back, adn then weld in new metal. think along the lines of what Restoration projects on early model cars go thru, and you'll see what I'm saying....

Message: Make it a wire feed welder > And your only interested in one that uses bottled gas with the wire > The wire feeds that use flux coted wire are a pain and do not do near the nice job > I have a hobart handler 120 I bought years ago and I wouidn't use anything else for small shop work > But hobart sold out to miller and miller incorperated the hobart system into the miller machines and turned hobart welders into a cheap version > One important thing to remember > Wire feed do not work in the wind or with a fan blowing towards you > It blows the shield gas away from your work >
