I don't think the transfer case has vacuum, the front axle does. What kind of problem do you have?

There is a small vacuum switch that screws into the front half of the transfer case on the driver's side. It has a keyed plug with 4 vacuum lines that connects to it. One line goes up to the intake manifold to supply vacuum, a second line runs to a small ball canister mounted under the bed and the third and fourth lines run up to the axle disconnect shift motor. When in 2wd, vacuum is supplied to the inboard front line. When you shift into 4Hi or 4Lo, the range fork inside the transfer case presses against a ball valve in the threaded ends of the vacuum switch, which shifts the vacuum from the inboard to the outboard line. Not really much there to troubleshoot unless you're checking functionality or for vacuum leaks. What kind of problem are you troubleshooting?

Thanks to all this is quit a story. I'm in Denver CO the truck is in Ft Myers FL with son He drove truck from here before he left we completely rebuilt front end and clutch. After he made the trip the tranny started making a lot of noise. We desided to have rebuilt, put in shop had tranny and transfer rebuilt. $1500.00 later I'm told it's not right, take back to shop. Shop tells him rebuild kit had recall probelms, pick up friday was told they can't figure vacuum lines. My son was in a hurry ( 21 & weekend in FLA ) so he takes truck gets it on road calls me sayes it's still not right, figures out it's in 4wd high gets in 2wd noise is still ther but not nearly as bad. Will pass on all info. THANKS To ALL hope this works and noise is gone.

Sounds like the shop isn’t very good. The vacuum switch is a small external unit that screws into the side of the transfer case. It kind of looks like an oversize oil pressure sending unit. Anyhow, it has a keyed plug that plugs into it with the 4 vacuum lines. Since the plug is keyed, it should only go on one way though I would guess some dimwit may be able to put it on with the wrong orientation with a bit of effort. Rebuilding the transfer case should have no effect on how the vacuum system works unless they managed to damage one of the lines while removing/reinstalling the tranny/transfer case. I would suggest you verify the plug is on correctly then follow the normal troubleshooting procedure for the CAD. It’s possible that it may not disengaging when shifting from 4wd back to 2wd. But that shouldn’t cause noise in the transfer case. When in 2wd, the transfer case disengages the front drive shaft in the transfer case and the CAD disengages the front drive shaft at the right inner axle stub shaft so the drive shaft shouldn’t spin while moving. Even if the CAD were sticking, the front drive shaft would be spinning freely at the transfer case.

I have copies of the FSM troubleshooting flowcharts for the front CAD here:

http://www.walt-n-ingrid.com/modifications.html

They’re in the section labeled “4x4 Won't Engage”
