Well my 2002 Dakota burned to the ground last night. I have been having a electrical drain on the battery that no mechanic could seem to find, including the dealer. The power windows would only work half the time, and the power seat too. The lights would occasionly flicker, but still no one could find the problem. Well while driving last night I started to smell something burning. I stopped the truck and popped the hood and low and be hold it was on fire on the drivers side. I gathered what personal stuff I could get out of my truck and called 911. Before they got there I watched my truck burn. The only thing left is chared sheet metal. What could have caused this? Them damn mechanics and dealer are gonna hear something about this......I could have been seriously hurt or even killed in this kind of accident......

Probable bad / or damaged wiring harness
possibly around door ' sill ' area !
Hope you had good " fire insurance " ?
Better luck on the next vehicle....

Dang man, I'm sorry to hear that. A Dealer should of found the problem, especially if the mechanics are ASE certified. If I were you, I'd also send a certified letter to Chrysler with a statement from the police, your insurance provider, and maybe even your lawyer. Or better yet, have the lawyer send the letter with all that info since there is a better chance of a response.

That does indeed suck, hope you get some consideration from DC and/or the dealer (I doubt it though).
As a side note: I had a fire from a loose fuel line in my B300 van some years back in a parking lot. Some quick-reacting guy (God bless him) from a nearby store came running out with a fire extinguisher and saved the van. I now carry one of those $10 ABC-type extinguishers in both my trucks.

Most cars that burn have a fuel leak (I'm acting like an expert), Hot gas on the manifold kiond of thing. Just wires shorting wouldn't engulf the vehicle????
Hope your insurance is good, some folks would like to see their car burn.

MStephens - is there a source for your claim, or are you just guessing ? Wires can easily start plastic burning, of which there is a lot on modern vehicles. If I had to guess though, I suspect tires may cause more fires than fuel leaks. Saw several vehicles burn from that - people trying to drive with a flat to get to next exit - overheating the tire to where it spontaneously combusts. I've put a couple out with a water extinguisher too. Tire fires often rekindle after being knocked down with a chemical extinguisher since there is still so much heat in the tire. Non of this helps flaming though; he knows it was the wiring. Sorry dude.

Well YEAH, I have an electrical fire, and I have had some wires shorting out and burning in a couple of cars.
I'm just thinking of my DAK engine compartment, passenger side where there are some wires BUT not many. Most are on the drivers side, where my battery is. So sheet metal, cooper wires with plastic insulation,... doesn't seem like a lot of fuel to sustain AN INFERNO.

On that same day my 99 Dakota R/T also went up in flames.It had only 17 thousand miles. The battery has been very low so I charged it last week and finally started it, idled for a while then smoke started under the hood. Couldn't open the hood (I guess the hood cable melted) all I could do was shoot water from the outside(no help,maybe some) until the fire truck got here 15 minutes later. They took a few minutes just to put it out. The Battery had the biggest burn area,I guess it was some kind of short. We'll everything was fried. There went my Kenne Bell supercharger I installed 4 years ago. And I installed a Air Ride front and rear suspension just last year.Even though it's still good, but now on the wrong truck.All I can say now is I'm glad that I took it out of the garage, otherwise I'd be homeless.

Now you know why its good to carry a fire extinguisher incase things should heat up under your hood.
