Message: I have a 3.9L 03 quad cab. I noticed that there is a small electric fan right behind the radiator and then i have that power robbing fan hooked to the engine. Could i take out the fan on the engine and be fine with that electric fan. Also what is the best performance mod that i can do under 250 dollars. Thanks in advance.

Message: That single auxillary fan isn't enough to keep the truck cool in the summer time. But you can replace the stock main fan with an electric for les than $250. If you're a carefull shopper and can do the work yourself, you might even have enough left over for a Hypertech programmer.
If you've done no mods yet, your first change should be a programmer like Hypertech. That's about the best bang for the buck I've seen on these trucks.
Then change to a 180* thermostat, and add Water Wetter. The cooler temp won't gain you any power. But it will keep the heads cooler and prevent detonation under a load.

Message: .boB, in my case, i'd have to disagree with you on the stock fan not being enough. i have an '00 QC 3.9 5spd w/195 tstat and i removed my clutch fan a year ago. i have not had any cooling issues even in the hot south louisiana summers. idling with a/c on in traffic my temp rarely gets to 210 then the fan kicks in.which is about what it would get when i still had the factory fan. i could also install an adjustable temp switch but i haven't seen a need for it yet.
towing and or an auto tranny may be a different story. both of those will add some heat to the cooling system.

I usually install my clutch fan in the summertime because if I decide to go offroad my 4.7 will heat up. However, as long as you are moving you won't have a single problem with heat.
I say pull it off and toss it in the bed till you are comfortable with it, if it seems to be heating up to the point that the electric fan can't keep it under wraps, spin the clutch fan back on and have at it.
Also, if you read around, you'll find that there are vastly more people who choose the SuperChips tuner over the Hypertech. This is because the SC tuner has a large following with proven gains, not to many people seem to know about the Hypertech.

Actually, I do. I've been around the block a few times, and tried a lot of stuff. Driven, built, modified, raced, a lot of vehicles; both high and low buck.
You yourself said you have to take the fan off and then put it back on sometimes because in some circumstances it's needed. The way I see it, that means the single factory aux fan isn't enough.
>> As long as you keep moving <<
Well, of course. All vehicles are that way. The fan simply moves air. If you're already moving through the air, you don't need a fan.
I have a big inch Cobra replica. Even in the summertime I turn the fan off when I'm out of town or on the track. I was driving PPIR last July. Track surface temps were 149*. I ran the track up to 6,200 rpm's for 20 minute sessions. I had the fan off until the cool down lap.
At one time, there was a fan and shroud kit that included a crude speed sensative switch. When the vehicle speed was above 45mph, the electric fan shut off.
If you never tow, never haul, never commute in city traffic, or live where it never gets hot, that wimpy aux fan will be fine. Otherwise, replace it with a fan that moves more air and has an on-off switch.

I said, "*Like* Hypertech". Why that brand? Just happened to be the first one that came to mind. Is it a good tuner? IMO, yes. Is Superchips better? If you need the added capabilites, yes it is. Pick whichever one suits your need. I used Hypertech; got a great deal on it, and I'm happy with it.

Message: Glad to see that you are NOT some little kid trolling around here. I want you to know I'm not trying to downplay your intelligence, just constructively criticize bits and pieces of your info with my applicable information.
The only time I've ever noticed my 4.7 need more than the aux electric fan was when I was pulling a buddy in a 1500 chevy out of some mud. Lots of RPM with little to no movement. I don't tow very often but, when I do, I usually load it pretty heavy. 3.55 gears, 4x4 pulling the afformentioned 1500 chevy on his car trailer and I never saw the needle go high enough to turn the fan on.
Moreover, you are running a 3.9 that shouldn't put as much thermal strain on the cooling system as my 4.7.

Message: You can pull a good fan from the bone yard from a lot of vehicles. Ford use them in Mustangs and some crown vics. Many manufacturers recognize the value of an electric fan. You can usually get them for <$50.
I picked up a small Spal fan from another board for $25 last year. A thermal switch and some wires and it does a nice job on my '66 mustang 302/auto. Keeps the temps below 200* in the summer - but I'm not running the A/C.
I got my Hypertech on sale from summit for $160 a couple of years ago.

Message: While we're on the subject, does anyone have any good advice for an electric fan conversion for a 98 5.2 auto ? I live in phoenix area and tried a flex a lite extreme 180 and it was worthless.
