2001 Dakota - For the last 3 months I have a tinney sounding vibrating noise in the front end somewhere. It only occurs at 40 mph or above. A week ago it developed into a clicking noise at any speed. A friednd and I thought it was the left front axle. When the truck was jacked up there seemed to be noise coming from the axle. I brought it to my mechanic (trusted) and he said it was the brakes, the tension springs were not holding the pads correctly. I questioned him on the axle and he said it was ok. He did a brake job. I picked up the truck and the tinney noise was still there but not as loud and is seems to be intermittent. Once the car is warm the noise goes away. Any ideas???????????

Bernie, I also have a 2001 4x4 and my left front shaft just went out. Have somebody check the small stub shaft that connects the axle to the differential box. Mine went out with small vibration that turned into alot of thumping and grinding. What happened was that water got into the spline teeth and "believe it or not" rusted them so badly that they totally ground off. It is fixed and my wallet is $304 lighter. As always Dodge wouldn't even give me a dime of help. I didn't think it was physically possible to strip teeth off a splined shaft but that's what happened. Oh yeah...this happened while in 2 wheel drive going down the highway. Good luck.
