Subject: Extended warranty IP: Logged
Message: I purchased a new Dak in Oct 05. It's a 2 wheel 4.7 5 speed auto. Chrysler is now sending me offers of extended warranty. The truck comes with 3/36 bumper to bumper and 7/70 for powertrain. I usually don't go for extended warranties but they are offering all the money back if I don't have any repairs during the warranty period. The cost is about $1200 for 5/70. Looking through the brochure it looks like there is a lot of items covered, supposedly 5700 items including Ball Joints. I was just wondering what everyones opinion is or if anyone has had any experience with this type of warranty. Oh by the way I luv the truck!
Thanks for any input.

Message: Did you finance your truck through Chrysler? I financed through my credit union and bought an extended warranty from them through a company called InterContinental Warranty Services Inc which basically gives the same warranty that you are talking about. I purchased the warranty for $1676 and paid an additional $110 for the GPR (Guaranteed Price Refund). If I don't use the warranty for the 3 year/100,000 mile period I get back all but the $110. The warranty came with a $0 deductible and the company is rated A++ from AM Best. Whether it is Chrysler who owns the contract for extended warranty or someone else, check with AM Best and see what they are rated. The good thing for me is that it was offered by my credit union and if anything were to happen to that company, the credit union is liable for the warranty or the refund. Look at the fine print; make sure of the deductible. Is there a deductible per incident? Is there a maximum amount of uses? Be careful.

Message: Another thing to be concerned about is documenting your maintenance for warrantees like this. They love to weasel out of paying if they can. Some swear by these warrantees, but realize it is a money making proposition for the issuer, or they wouldn't be selling the product. I always try to look at the big picture financially; by now I'm ahead many thousands of $$$ since I've never bought one of these. Even if something major breaks, I'll still be way ahead. What is your tolerance for risk ?

Message: The extended warrenty is a sucker bet. Many consumers have been burned by them. You're betting $1200 that the truck will break down with some major repair. The company is betting that it won't.
What on your truck - that's not covered by the pwertrain warrenty - could self destruct and cost you more than $1200 to fix? Keeping in mind Pep Boys/Autozone pricing, and doing the repairs yourself.

Message: Thanks for all the input. I agree with everything that has been said but it still seems like a safe bet because of the money back issue. If there are no claims or repairs for the length of the warranty I am supposed to get all my money back. This is the part I am concernced about and need to read the fine print.

Message: Here's how that could play out - something that costs a couple hundred will likely break sooner or later - so what do you do then ? Use the warranty, and lose your money back option; or pay for it yourself, not taking advantage of the warranty you paid for, and hope nothing else breaks ? They know almost everyone will have a small claim sooner or later, so they won't likely be paying off on that money back option. They make very good money on these warantees.

Message: AAA has an extended warranty with some company that partner with. I recently found out about that, I'm going to get a quote from them for my wifes 2001 pontiac grand am, her warranty she got when she bought the car is about to be up.
Not sure what all is covered, but when i find out, i will post.
I just got a 2002 QC from a dodge dealership, i opted for the gold extended warranty, 4/40 bumper-to-bumper.

Message: Check out Harlanautomart.com. They are a Dodge dealer in Iowa that discounts extended warranties. There may be a better place but that was the best I found. I did not buy the extended warranty when I bought my 01. When the 3 year warranty was about to run out I did a search on extended warranty for Dodge and this place came up. As long as your orignal warranty has not expired you can still get the factory extension. I would wait as long as possible because they charge by the number of miles your odometer shows today to the number of miles you want to warranty and number of years from today till end of warranty period. It is my understanding if you have put on 36K at 36 months and purchase an additional 4 years (maximum) to say 100K you are only paying for 4 years and 64K of coverage. If you buy the day you buy the truck you pay for 7 yrs and 100K regardless of the fact that you are covered for free the first 3 yr/36K. Anyway, this place offered a 25% discount on the factory warranty cost. I bought mine 2 years ago with 27K miles on the odometer and they sent all the daimler chrysler paperwork. I only bought the powertrain and electrical.

Message: Here's other info I found out.
If you buy the extended warranty through the dealer and you take your vehicle to them for repairs, this could happen.
Even if the repair is minor ($100 or less), but IS covered under your warranty and they research and find out you have the extended warranty, they most likely will automatically charge it to your warranty whether you want them to or not and this will void your money back guarantee. It has happened to a few people already.
Best bet; if it is minor and you want to make sure your warranty stays in tact for the refund, take it to someplace other than the dealer that you trust.
