Subject: brake caliper support rail question
IP: Logged

Message:
When you replace the pads on disc brakes (specifically on a 99 Dakota), are the brake pad ends supposed to rest on the brake caliper support rails, or is it sufficient for them to be securely attached to the caliper itself with some anti-seize? Thanks!

Rick,
In answer to your ? The pads rest on the support rail. They need to be able to slide on that rail when you use your brakes.

I'm glad I asked, then, because these new pads aren't resting on the support rails. I made sure the pads were securely seated in the caliper. The inner pad snaps into the piston so that's a no-brainer. The outer pad had some guide bumps that I made sure fit into the holes in the calipers. But once I bolt the calipers back onto the steering knuckles, there is about 3 mm space between the nubs on the pads and the rails. Is that going to be a problem? From what I can tell, if I definitely want the pads to rest on the rails, I'm going to have to fudge their fitting into the calipers.

When I changed my brakes and rotors I actually had to use a rubber mallet to hammer the outside one into place. It should be all the way to the top. The outside one doesn't slide, the Caliper slides as does the inside one. Basically, when you put it on and if it doesn't look right, it probably isn't.

Yeah, and when you have a panic stop with friends and family in the truck, you will be able to tell if the "fudge" worked or not.

Read my posts closely. The pads fit securely into the calipers the way they were designed; but they don't rest on the guide rails. I'm trying to find out if that makes a difference or if it's an inconsequential artefact from using third party products.

The pads need to rest on the guide rails ..... the tabs are on the pads so that they are made to sit on the guide rails. Perhaps you have gotten the wrong pads?

I figured out my problem by looking at a Mopar magazine website. The clips on the outboard pads which are supposed to go UNDER the guide rails, I had put them OVER the rails. I can't believe I took those brakes apart four times trying to figure out why I would get the occasional vibration from that wheel and put the caliper back on incorrectly every time. I don't feel too bad about it, though, because the tech at the brake shop missed it, too. Everybody has to learn somewhere!
