Subject: Guess My Problem and Cost to Fix IP: Logged
Message: Here is the situation.
1. I don't know the what the problem is.
2. Here is the situation. I was driving home from work - everything fine - drove apx 10 miles. Stopped, turned of the engine and was back in the truck within 30 seconds. Turned the ignition, no sound, lights on dash were on and went out as if starting up; lights on and did not dim as I turned the ignition. No starting sounds at all.
Tried jump starting - nothing different from above.
Tried hitting the starter - nothing different from above
So here is the challenge:
What is the problem and how much to fix. I had the truck towed to a Dodge dealership. This is a v-6 3.9L 2000 Quad Cap 4x4. No other problems to date.
Cost so far $20 tip to AAA driver
I will post the dealer's fix and cost

I think Dodge charges $77 for a battery.

Message: Not the battery - lights works.
One other clue - AAA tried to jump the car - nothing changed from what I wrote.
Could it be the car was not in gear?
Could I have put in the key turned the ignition on and removed the key? I woke up with that idea.

Message: Make sure you have the transmission in park or nuetral. Try them both. Check all wiring at the battery, starter solenoid, ignition switch & Park/Neutral/Backup light Switch. It didn't say it in the book, but I would also check out the Park/Neutral/Backup light Switch by pulling the plug off it and connect up the 2 outside terminals to an ohm meter and watch the resistance while you have someone shift it in and out of Park & Neutral. The meter should show a short or close to zero ohms when in Park and Neutral. All of these things are listed in the Haynes Dodge Durango & Dakota Pick-ups Repair Manual. I recommend picking up a copy, price is in the $13-$14 range. They have a troubleshooting section in there just for this type of problem. You said that the lights don't dim when you hit the ignition, which tells me thay the starter isn't locked into the flywheel, but you didn't say if you had any dash lights (oil, seatbelt, airbags, etc) light up.

Message: If the Park/Neutral/Reverse Light switch isn't working in Park or Neutral the Starter isn't going to work, and the lights won't dim, logically.

Message: OK here is the answer - The dealership got in the car and started it up; did the dianostics - no problem.
I think I didn't have the gear shift in the proper gear. Somehow I was able to take out the key put it back turn on the ignition.
Cost:
TIP to tow truck driver $20
Lunch for my nephew for driving me to pick up the truck 25
Total $45 - just because it wasn't in gear!!!!!
49K miles on the truck and no problems

Message: Sounds more like a heat soak problem. If it does this again make a note of the symptoms then open the hood let the engine bay loose some heat for about 5 min. this should be enough to let the old girl fire up. NOTE if possible check the inrush current going to the starter when this happens. If you know any electricians they should be able to walk you through this it's very simple but a decent dvom with dc inductive abilitys is NOT a cheap tool.

Message: Check the battery cables....molded cables can look fine but when taken off the battery and given a good yank on the ends they come right off (yank hard because the end could be loaded with corrosion). or it Could be the neutral safety switch also
