Subject: Turn signals only work sometimes IP: Logged
Message: Just recently my turn signals started to work only about half the time I try to use them. Sometimes they will work for a second and then quickly turn back off.
I was just wondering if anyone knew what might possibly be wrong and/or what I might need to do about it.

Message: check the turn singal relay. It is responsible for the flashing action. Check your owners manual for the exact location. It should be located in the fuse panel in the cab. It is either big and round or big and square, usually silver or black in color.

Message: What year Dakota? My 02 flasher is located
under the dash.. Cost around 25 bux from the
stealership only.
The days of the old tried and tru "stat" turn
signal relays are gone. My 02 flasher unit is
about the size of a pack of smokes and must have
at least a 10 pin connector.

Message: Okay, I just got back from the dealership and I asked for the turn signal relay and he basically said that he didn't know what I was referring to...he said I might be talking about the "flasher" which he said was located under the PDC under the hood...he said something about it having a metallic strip and that it made a circuit...it was $37
so what do you guys think about this...bc I'm confused and don't really know much about this kind of thing.
Cheers,
James

Message: I'm surprised! If you lived in the south or southeast and your signals went bad you probably wouldn't know for years as it seems most people here either don't use them or have them removed.

Message: yeah some people refer to it as a flasher as that is what it does. It is a relay that opens and closes causing your turn signal to "flash".
Just pick up a new one and replace it, just a few dollars.
some people here in the ATL area don't even use headlights at night!

Message: I'm having the same problem on a 2000 Dakota Quad Cab. Can anyone tell me exactly where this flasher is located? I've looked under the dash and at the fuse panel and nothing looks familar.

Message: I thought of something a couple of hours ago, but didn't get to write it till now. Check your light bulbs on the side that you are having problems with. Sometimes the filiment breaks, but moves around enough to contact and work. If there is not enough current through the flasher bulb it won't trigger, unless you get the special heavy duty ones that will trigger regardless.

Message: If your 2000 is the same (wiring wise) as my 2002,
the turn signal control module is located just
left of the steering column behind the plastic
covering that raps around the column. You MUST
remove a few screws to get the cover off to expose
the flasher module.
Turn your four ways on.. You'll hear it flashing
in the black package about the size of a pack of
smokes.
The mudule can not be repaired and it's a dealer
buy only. I replaced mine when I had the same
problem as lllvibell has.
A VERY easy do it yourself job. Don't get screwed
by the stealership!

Message: Alright it works!
For my 2000 koda the flasher unit was a small green cube and was located on the back side of the fuse panel...I had to reach up under the dash to get to it...pretty easy indeed..
I love this forum....Thanks y'all!

Message: WOW, from 2000 to 2002 DC made that big of a
wiring change! Hard to believe unless it had/has
something to do with a Dakota with and without
the tow package.
My 02 has the tow package, lllvibelll. Does your
00?

Message: The 01 model year brought a bunch of changes really. Rack-n-Pinion steering was a major mechanical change and the interior etc changed that year as well. Along with the visual changes came alot of electrical changes. More and more became computer controlled with the Central Timing Module in the drivers kick panel.
There are other changes as well, but those are some pertinent ones.

Message: You got tilt wheel? I've seen this a few times, the 12V positive lead in the steering column harness is a hair too short and over time, will break the wire supplying power to the turn signal switch. If you move the steering wheel up or down, sometimes they would work. I had to solder a short piece of wire into both of mine to correct the problem. Happened in both my 88 and 96. It was weird, no turn signals or four ways, but if I left the four way switch in the on position, the signals would work.

Message: My 01, quad cab, usually flawless, occasionally has the turn signal's and at the same time the stereo and stock Infinity equalizer just go out on start up. Turn it off and on usually fixes the problem.
So I wiggle the key, and that fixes it too! Only happens about 10% of the time. I'll try tilting the wheel, which I usually never adjust from where I leave it. I'm not rotund.

Message: My 02 also has a turn signal problem, but a bit different. When ever I signal for a right hand turn, all four courners blink (i.e. like the hazords are one). Any ideas? I am guess the modul has failed and needs to be replace.
Thanks
