Subject: Watch your Brakes IP: Logged
Message: I posted this on the V8 board on the 21st, thought I should have put this on the general board too. Here it is:
I just recently had to change my Brakes and Rotors. I bought the truck one year ago this month. Since this state checks the brake pads once a year I thought I didn't have anything to worry about, then suddenly I heard the grinding. I first bought the pads, and then I took the rotors to be ground. Now add to the story that I only have 76k on the truck, I was surprised when the shop told me my thought to be good rotor was 0.003 away from failing and couldn't be ground. I guess what I want to put out is even if you change your brakes in time, make sure you have your Rotors scoped. KEEP SAFE!

Message: The min thickness on dakota disc brakes is 22.6mm
Max diameter for the drums is 282.3mm. They should be checked every 15,000 miles. More often as they get closer to max allowances.

Message: You missed the point! Checking the brakes, fine, but the rotor thickness is what I'm trying to point out. The discard thickness for the rotor is 0.890" (mine was 0.893" at 76k miles). I don't know how long the rotors are suppose to last, but I always thought it was longer than the pads. I ended up replacing both the brakes and the rotor. In my state (VA), by regulations the brakes is part of the state vehicle inspection, and shouldn't go bad before the next inspection, but mine did. I am glad, however, that the rotors don't cost anywhere as much as the did 20 years ago.

Message: He didn't miss the point at all, just gave the spec in metric. Not at all uncommon for rotors to wear more since the advent of semi-metalic pads many years ago. Don't be so nervous, you were still within spec.

Message: I wasn't nervous, just that I didn't expect to see them wear that fast. It also explains why I was starting to feel the pulsating on the foot peddle when I applied the brake.

Message: What you experienced is actually pretty normal for Dak's. I have an 00' and at 54k I replaced the OEM rotors due to warpage. A high quality after market rotor will last much longer. But a big contributer to failure is the semi-metalic pads. You can try running slotted/vented rotors, there are several mod kits out on the market.
Welcome to owning a Dak, brake wear is part of the package.

Message: I had to same problem with my rotors and they couldn't be resurfaced. So I had to buy two new rotors and one fills a bit rough like the pads are wearing out. And there new pads!

Message: I think with rotors and pads you basically have two choices: Rotors too hard for pads which will cause the pads to have to be replaced more often, or softer rotors that will warp and wear faster but be easier on the pads.

Message: In my most recent brake jobs for friends and family I have started using cermaic brake pads (friction master) with cheap store brand rotors (wearever). Ceramic cost a little more money, but there worth it in my opinion. Every car I put ceramic on has yet to warp rotors. I didnt measure them to begin with, so I cant really tell which is wearing more. But I dont care, as long as I dont have warped rotors. oh and cermaic pads dont make nasty looking brake dust either, a big plus if you have nice wheels.

Message: Mattleg what brand of ceramic pads do you use? I have been doing some research on the subject, because I want to put ceramic on when ever my current pads wear out. I have found at least 20 different brands that make pads for dakotas, and of coarse they all claim to be the best.

Message: i just drive the bitch. when i hear a sound, i fix it. its not science. if your pads are worn, change them b4 they grind. if your rotors fail or whatever, you will know and you truck will still stop....trust me.. i know.

Message: I had the same problem except mine warped AND cracked with only 45k miles, bought brembo rotors and some ceramic pads and the damn things cracked again at 63k miles but the brakes have plenty left. I guess ill have to try some slotted or drilled rotors next.
