Subject: Torque Converter Problem IP: Logged
Message: I have been dealing with a problem for months now, and my dealer is very little help. Between the speeds of 80 to 100k, the torque converter keeps searching for a new gear, causing a mild feel like a missfire in one cylinder.
Thought that was the problem at first, but the dealer says it is the torque converter, and suggests I get a transmission service done, change fluid etc.
Anyone had this experiance, and is this the best way to go?

Message: Shark, I just had my 60k trans service and it really smoothed out my mild shifting problems. Are you having this problem with the cruise on? Try running these speeds without the cruise and see if that resolves it...then it is a cc problem.

Message: Rascal,
Doesn't matter if cruise is on or not, but less noticable with cruise on. What do you mean "CC" problem?

I had my trans flushed, then the pan dropped and the filter changed...cost me $220 from the dealer.

Message: Well im bringing this back up.
I think my torque converter is going bad, here is what is happening,
When I take off slow it shifts through all the gears fine, but if i try to take off fast it jumps like it is a standard when you dont realase the clutch quick enough, I mean it hops and then after it goes its fine, then in second it kinda hopps also, but what I have noticed, If i power brake it for a sec and take off all is well, so I think that it might be my torque converter, i have a 98 3.9 slt, anyone got a clue?

Message: Didn't you say on another thread that your fluid was black? That's your problem. You may have done permanent damage to the valvebody or clutch packs. I suggest that you flush it again after a 1000 miles or so and see if any trash comes out.

Message: Yeah, I did cange it last week and Im changing it again this sat. The magnet did have some blak gell like crap on it, Im going to try and get it all out. It did smooth out the shifts a lil bit.
what is the valvebody or clutch packs? Are they in the trany or in the torque converter.

Message: You're an auto, right? Is it hunting for gears, and doing a double shift out of first? Mine was like that, and it turned out to be the transducer, and governor pressure solenoid, both sensors in the tranny.

Message: It could also be the valvebody in the tranny...a guy that does performance work on Dakotas here in Dallas says the dealership has had alot of the newer trannies messing up due to a crappy valvebody...they are upgrading to a newer and better one. I'm getting mine done under warranty...would hate to have to buy a new one I hear they're pretty high priced though.
But like Lesley said I have also heard its what she mentioned too.

Mike, What place in Dallas, Im from Irving, Hay by the way I seen you racing at newberry the otherday and it looked like your tranny was doing the same thing mine was, I could be wrong though, anyhow, let me know where that shop is.

Message: I think they were around $100 each, but that was Canadian. It didn't hop, but it surged forward, sometimes twice.

Message: No, my check engine light didn't come on, but when it was diagnosed on the computer, it had no idea what gear it was in.
What did I do with Greg? I didn't do anything with Greg, heck I'm 1500 miles away! I'm going down there again the last week in August though. Come to think of it, where is Greg - he would be a good one to ask about your tranny.
