Toolfań,
Questions: Vehicle? Age? Condition? Climate?
First, determine the age and condition of the engine/seals/etc. Second, determine where you live (Winter / Summer extreme temperatures).
The first number in a viscosity rating (viscosity grade actually) indicates cold start viscsity and both are a "10w-". If you live in an extreme winter climate, you might want to consider a "5w-" or a "0w-" oil for improved cold starts.
The second # ("-40") is the warm (operating temperature) viscosity grade (approx. 10 minutes after starting). Why are you considering a "thicker" 40 wt. oil vs a "thinner" 30 wt oil?. Are you seeking higher oil pressure readings for some reason? Are you considering a thicker oil because the seals are leaking? A 10w-40 is a "10w-" when cold and a "40 wt." when it hits operating temperature (approximately 10 minutes after stating).
Also, a 10w-40 will rob you of gasoline mileage ... typically 2% - 3% less MPG ... than a 10w-30. Also keep in mind that a higher viscosity can translate to a greater load on the pumping system, and pumping losses through the passages, bearings, and even the filter. Theoretically, that results in less power and lower fuel efficiency (lower MPG).
A healthy (well maintained) engine, still within tolerance, can maintain sufficient oil film strength with "lower viscosity fluids" vs. "higher viscosity fluids" ... which has many more advantages than switching to a heavier weight oil.

Message: if you just used it to top off a low oil level. its ok and wont hurt nothing. I wouldnt use a 40 weight oil as an oil change unless its a high mileage engine. as the oil may not flow well in certain areas of the passages and might starve the engine some on oil.
